What will be taught? This curriculum was founded within the Science of Reading. It is a science backed curriculum with explicit systemic instruction in the three critical foundational skills. Those three skills are phonological awareness, decoding, and sight word recognition. These skills will be reinforced throughout each lesson using a variety of activities. A few examples are see and say, drawing pictures of the words we are learning for recognition, spelling the words with fun lettering, and reading engaging level appropriate books. What topics will you cover? One topic we will cover is reading comprehension. We will cover this by establishing a purpose for reading, identifying text structure characteristics, building background knowledge and vocabulary, and assessing understanding through student reflection. We will also cover phonics, fluency, and word recognition/analysis skills. How is your class structured? My classes are very organized and will follow the same schedule each week. This way, students know what to expect and can be prepared for the best learning outcomes. We will start with introductions and then move to the curriculum. At the end of class, we will have a small group chat before signing off. I will implement the curriculum as it is presented, however, I do add fun, reinforcement games and activities. Does the curriculum used meet expectations of alignment? For kindergarten through fifth grade, this curriculum meets expectations in complexity and quality, building knowledge, and usability. The materials were found to provide opportunities for student growth in reading, writing, speaking and listening, and developing language skills.

Hello everyone and welcome to my teaching profile! I appreciate you taking a look!
**I am new to the Outschool platform, but I have been teaching online for 12 years.
Similar to many moms, I wear multiple hats. Some of my expertise comes from personal experience while other comes from professional experience. I was born to be a teacher and truly believe I excel in providing safe, engaging classes for all learners. I also believe communication plays an integral part in the success of any teacher. Please do not hesitate to reach out via the outschool platform for any questions or concerns.
My two children, 10 and 12, have been homeschooled since before they could talk. My son is dyslexic and while working with him took an immense about of patience and understanding, he now LOVES to read! While the main goal in working with him was to get him to read, more importantly, the goal of fostering a love of learning always came first. Everyday we begin our homeschool with circle time. We have done this since they were little and adjusted the topics/discussions as they grew. It is a part of our day that they always look forward to! I also lead our local homeschool co-op in circle time 3 times a week.
I have taught elementary classes in the public school system for several years. I also hold a Masters of Science with an emphasis in general Psychology. All of my professional life has been spent working with children and education in one way or another.
While obtaining my Masters of Science degree, I became quite the researcher. My thesis was on isolation in an online learning environment and how to foster a sense of community within group courses. I have also done an immense amount of research on children and their learning styles. My classes are structured in a way that allows students with any learning style to benefit. For instance, in all of my classes there is a physical aspect for the kinesthetic learners. I always use presentations or books with bright, fun colors for those visual learners, and I use song and rhyme for the auditory learners.
