Students will first understand the difference between perimeter and area by creating a visual representation. They will then find the perimeter of a few shapes. Students will then move on to finding the area of squares and rectangles and learn why the formulas for these shapes are similar. Students will demonstrate comprehension by solving a few problems. We will then move on to finding the are of a triangle. Students will learn how this formula differs from others and why it does. Students will show comprehension by solving a few problem. To conclude the lesson students will solve 5 word problems involving area and perimeter of the shapes covered. Students will leave the class with notes to use in the future. Students will find the area and perimeter of squares, rectangles and triangles in both skill problems and word problems. Please have students come to class prepared with a notebook, a pencil and at least two colored pens.
This is a lesson that I have taught both in a public school with a class of 30 students and in private tutoring setting, and I have always been able to identify the misconceptions regarding this lesson. This helps me adjust the lesson to individual needs.
