Do you know how to use all the coins and bills in U.S. currency? Join Ms. AJ to learn all about different coins and dollars in the United States! Students will learn to identify pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and bills from $1-100. They will practice buying and selling in a virtual play time setting. Finally, students will participate in a virtual market that allows them to practice using money to buy various items!

Students will be introduced to the various U.S. coin types and learn about their worth. They will learn to represent their value on a place value chart. There will be a 15 minute virtual play session where students take turns buying and selling various items at various costs.

Lesson 2:
How many in a dollar?
Students will be introduced to 1 dollar bills, and practice using various coins to make a dollar. They will practice using a place value chart to represent various values of coins, and will practice adding up coins to equal a dollar. There will be a 15 minute virtual play session wheres students take turns buying and selling various items at a "dollar store"

Lesson 3:
Bills, bills, bills
Students will be introduced to 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 dollar bills. They will practice using a place value chart to represent various values of bills. They will have a 15 minute virtual play session where students take turns buying and selling various items. They will also spend 10 minutes creating their virtual stores for the market day during session 4.

Lesson 4:
Virtual Market Day!
Students will spend the session presenting their virtual stores and buying things from each others stores. We will discuss the concept of making change, breaking bills, and budgeting!

I am an experienced educator - 8 years in public school classrooms, and another 5 years teaching art, theater, and music for various organizations. I hold a Masters of Science in Teaching & Learning and a Masters of Art in International Education Development from Columbia University. I am certified in K-5 elementary education and 6-12 social studies.
My teaching philosophy balances student success with student happiness. I hold all participants to high standards, but manage their needs with compassion and understanding. I value process-based learning where mistakes are celebrated as an important part of learning something new.
