Class Experience

US Grade 5
This is a fifth-grade reading course! I will be utilizing Spectrum Fifth Grade Reading to use for my reading passages. These will be reading passages and questions at the beginning 5th grade level. As the course progresses onward, the reading passages will become more advanced at the 5th grade level. However, a student does not have to start from the beginning. In addition, even if a story is missed, that is okay. Most stories stand alone and are independent from each other. In addition, students will be writing the questions and answers. We will work on this together. Writing the questions and the answers (in complete sentences), will enable the student to practice their penmanship, writing complete sentences, using correct capitalization, punctuation, and grammar!
There will be a variety of reading passages from a variety of different topics -- to keep them interested!
The class will meet each day (Monday-Friday) for 45 minutes each session.
I will teach via Zoom. The reading passages will be displayed so the students can read and follow along. There will be a lot of interaction back and forth. Thus, I will be able to understand (assess) if the students are reading/comprehending what was read.
I am very patient in teaching! However, I do love to talk and garner feedback as well!
Students will interact quite a bit! They will be reading and answering questions (I will not always be the talker).
The student should have some working knowledge reading close to the 5th grade level. Even if the student is struggling in reading, or comprehension, this will be great practice. In addition, the student needs to be able to write (put letters down on paper).

Week of 8/29 - 9/2 Topic: Looking for Something Green
Week of 9/05 - 9/9 Topic: Australia's Giant Toads
Week of 9/12 - 9/16 Topic: Aussie Animals
Week of 9/19 - 9/23 Topic: A Garden in the Clouds

All the topics will change each week. We will not circle back and repeat the topics.
What can the students expect:
The readings will get progressively harder as the course moves on. However, students can join at any time! All of the classes will be held via Zoom. The classes will be interactive with both the teacher and students speaking. The students will read. The teacher will assist if necessary. Afterwards, the students will read and write/answer the questions with their pencil/paper. In addition, the students can expect many questions asked during the reading to assess their comprehension and understanding during the readings.

My name is Austin! I am a certified teacher with 24 years experience! I have taught everything from Pre-K to college! I love teaching! I have taught primarily special education and elementary school for many years. However, I have taught all subjects at all levels! I love to teach the basics: Reading, Writing, Math -- they are paramount to children succeeding: knowing the basics!

***** I currently teach Third Grade Reading Comprehension, Fourth Grade Reading Comprehension, and I do a private tutoring for a 3rd grader in 3rd Grade Reading Comprehension, and a 4th grader in 4th Grade Reading Comprehension. What can I help your child with?

I have taught reading as low as Pre-K! In addition, I am a certified special education teacher as well. If you would like a 1:1 tutoring for your child, please contact me! We can work something out!" *****

I have two degrees from college: BA in Journalism and a MA in Speech-Communications. I am duel certified in both Arizona and Texas in the following: Early Childhood, Elementary, Special Education, & Principal.

I am a firm believer that all children can succeed -- you just have to find the right motivation! You need to educate the entire child: academically and socially!

While we give age ranges for our classes, do not be afraid to enroll your child in my class if that is his/her reading ability. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me at any time!
