 Week 1
Lesson 1
Women's History and Women in War Time
We'll hop in our imaginary time machine and revisit key dates in women's history, such as, when women could inherit property, vote, or open a credit card in their own name. We'll also explore the iconic figure of Rosie the Riveter and real-life women who shifted wartime efforts.
Lesson 2
Young Women Whose Voice Changed the World
This session will focus on two young women, Anne Frank and Malala, who became refugees due to world violence. We'll link their experiences to the refugee crisis occurring in today's world and how it impacts the women of today.
Lesson 3
Women's Impact on Civil Rights
In this session we'll explore the bravery of women like Harriett Tubman and Ruby Bridges who risked so much to take a stand for civil rights. During this session we'll explore Freedom Quilts and their role in the Underground Railroad movement.
Lesson 4
Women Who Trailblazed New Professions
This discussion will center around women who entered profession and cleared a path for other women to follow. We'll explore Nelly Bly's trip around the world and Elizabeth Blackwell's "accidental" admittance to medical school..
Lesson 5
Creative Women Making Waves
We'll wrap up our week together by playing a game of Name That Creative Trailblazing Feminist! This session ends with a clip of Lucy Ricardo attempting to wrap chocolates in a factory and leaves learners rolling! However, as silly as Lucy may have been... she was the first woman to appear pregnant on TV, the first interracial marriage on telesion, and the first female studio president. Talk about trail blazing!
This class is taught in English.
Fair warning.... if you get me started talking about women's history, the invasion of Normandy, leaders like Churchill, or propaganda (to name a few) you could be here a while! I wasn't always a history buff. To be honest, in school I found it unrelatable and a bit dull. But as an adult, I fell in love. It is my goal to make a love of history positively contagious for young learners. We can do this by learning about historical figures in unconventional ways and bring them to life!

This class is very loosely based on the Goodnight Stores for Rebel Girls books. However, we'll go so much deeper! We won't skim over the life of Irena Sendler. We'll dig in! What was the Warsaw Ghetto? How did Europe reach this unfathomable point? What were the risks she faced? How did she achieve the impossible?

I have lived and breathed historical studies for nearly 20 years now and can't wait to share a taste of how women have shaped this world with your young learners!
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
The road to notoriety is not always a smooth one. We will touch on some delicate subjects and time periods with people like Ruby Bridges and Irena Sendlerowa (to name a few). I have children in this age category and will use my best judgement to keep it age appropriate, yet informative.
