Class Experience

This class introduces students to fundamental design principles and techniques in rendering clothes. Students will learn basic anatomy, figure and technical drawings in croquis construction. Students will then proceed to study the basics of garment detail drawing and how to apply such knowledge to properly draw the clothed body. Classes are highly interactive and students will have the opportunity to socialize and share their ideas in a fun and upbeat environment. It is a beginner level foundation class for students who would like to be future fashion designers, costume designers or fashion illustrators.

Day 1
FASHION FIGURES (CROQUIS)
Students will learn how to accurately build a 9-head croquis (a figure template that they can use to put clothes on), find harmonious proportions, and draw a stylized fashion figure from two perspectives - front and side. They will learn how to adjust the proportions to form a variety of body types to advocate the importance of having a positive body image of oneself.

Day 2
FASHION POSES
Students will learn how the body moves and balance the body using the Plumb Line. They will draw both standing and walking poses. They will use light and dark tones to illustrate body volumes. Class will explore the shades of skin and hair colors. We will open a discussion on the global progress on diversity and cultural acceptance in the fashion industry.

Day 3
FABRICS
Students will learn how to draw various textures of fabrics with some fundamental sketching and blending techniques. They will create the illusion of 3-D volume and density on a 2-D paper. They will learn how to render the lightness of transparent chiffon and stiff cotton, the luster of smooth leather, the softness of knitwear and wool, and the texture of fluffy fur.

Day 4
RENDERING CLOTHES - Wrapping Clothes Around Bodies
Wraparound is a fundamental principle to help students understand how to curve lines with the body to avoid a flat look.

Day 5
RENDERING CLOTHES - Details & Finishes
Students will learn sketching and blending techniques to render drapes and folds, pleats, ruffles, hems and darts, and other construction elements.

Day 6
RENDERING CLOTHES - Patterns & Prints
Students will learn the basics of illustrating print fabrics using a fairly simple pattern. They will learn how to scale down proportionally and simplify the details.
Learning Goals
Students learn to draw step-by-step, understand the core principles, master tools and techniques, compare materials, trust their intuition and vividly express themselves and convey their fashion ideas through sketching and illustrations.
