Are we alone? In a universe so full of planets and stars that our minds can’t even embrace the number, this is the just one of the many scientific questions that drives our current and past space races. Humans strive to learn more about our world, solar system, galaxy, and universe as a means of understanding how and why life exists on our planet, and whether or not there could potentially be various types of life in other areas of our universe. On our small planet, there have been those who have dared to dream of the various types of life that could exist out there in the mysterious, vast regions of space. We call this Science Fiction, and we have thousands upon thousands of written works, movies, cartoons, video games, and art pieces all designated as such. It seems humans have, for generations, imagined and dreamed of these mysterious beings, we call Aliens or Extraterrestrials. This unique class takes this topic for a creative spin as we look at how aliens are represented and depicted in various media and pop culture on our planet. We will look at specific games, cartoons, movies, and more which show a wide variety of aliens. Then we will discuss as a class, whether or not there might be the possibility of finding different types of life (bacteria, microscopic, animal, plant, etc.) out in the universe, and where scientists are currently looking for it. Students will learn that the “types of life” we might discover may be far different and varied from how the traditional “alien/extraterrestrial” here on Earth is portrayed. This course will serve as a stepping stone to expand the learner’s overall understanding of how the topic of Aliens has carved out an amazing array of movie lore, artwork, and more, which has amazed and bemused humans for centuries. This class is perfect for the space enthusiast, or any learner who loves open discussions about space related topics. *This one-time course is open to all learners who want to go on a fun, scientific and entertaining exploration of Fantastical Aliens. Teacher will also have additional resources, along with an amazing & fun review game in the Outschool Classroom, which will inspire additional learning for all minds! My unique style of teaching is full of high energy, funny, enthusiastic, and I love to hear from each of my learners during our class together! I use a variety of presentation & teaching tools, including videos, discussions, pictures, and interactive games, as we have fun learning all about the wonders of Space together. *No previous knowledge or classes required.
Learning Goals
Students will be introduced to the Fantastical topic of Aliens (extraterrestrials), and will engage in an interactive discussion in which we investigate the various media and pop culture references/uses of aliens in written works, video games, movies, cartoons, and art.
Students will be presented with what Science considers as “life”, and learners will be able to discuss if we were to find life out there, what types of life might it be.
Varying viewpoints will be explored and discussed about this topic.
Students will interact and reflect with learners from around the globe regarding this intriguing topic.

Parental Guidance
Learners will need their cameras turned on for each class. Parents may need to assist their child in learning how to "mute & unmute" themselves, as teacher will mute students at times during the "teaching" portion of our class & then ask them to "unmute" to answer questions & interact with the other learners during the interactive, conversational, and review portion of our class. This allows each learner the opportunity to hear what is taught, while still allowing for questions, interaction and such.
YouTube video clips will be shown at times during our class to allow learners to visualize the topics being covered. The links to these videos will be available after the class for parents & learners to view/review as desired.
Supply List
Any learning materials needed will be available for download in the Outschool classroom.

I have always had a love of space, from the moment my grandpa, an amateur astronomer, let me look through the 10-foot telescope he built all by himself, to watching shuttles & satellites lift into the sky, and watching some fall back to the earth. I have spotted some of the largest dust storms to hit Mars, and have enjoyed looking at the various craters on our Moon and seeing the rings around Saturn, all from my own backyard in Missouri & while using other telescopes my grandpa built. I have never ceased my exploration and search, looking to the skies to watch for eclipses, comets, and so much more! My love of all things Space has only increased with time, and I feel it is the next great wave of the future! As a teacher with a Master’s Degree in Teaching & over 30 years of experience working with children of various ages, and more than 6 years teaching students about Space as an amateur astronomer, as well as other Science-related subject-matter, I love sharing my knowledge with the next generation. My hope is to instill the awe-inspiring beauty the Unknown Universe holds, as well as encourage students to dream and believe! I hope to see you in class as we explore the Fantastical Aliens together!
