US Grade 4 - 7
What do potato chips, penicillin, the slinky, and post-it-notes have in common? They were all invented by accident! In this class, students will learn about ten things that were created by mistake. Learning about these inventions and the people who invented them is not only interesting, but also a good starting point in developing a growth mindset, as it helps to send the message that mistakes and failures can lead to positive outcomes. I will use a self-made PowerPoint featuring visuals such as pictures, props, and videos to present this information. I will encourage participation with discussion questions and check for understanding and foster engagement with some mini-quizzes built into the presentation. I am known for my energetic and passionate teaching style, and I accommodate ALL learners in my classroom. I fervently believe that failure needs to be normalized as a part of the learning process and celebrated as growth opportunity it is. My goal is that students leave class looking at mistakes and failure in a new, more positive, light.
Learning Goals
Students will be able to list at least 3 failed inventions.
