Class Experience
During this fun online class, students will learn about couplet poems and submit 12 or more original couplets. A couplet poem usually has 2 lines that rhyme. Some examples of relevant rhyming words are "fairy" and "berry," "roar" and "dinosaur," "crown" and "gown," "nose" and "rose," "cat" and "rat," and "horn" and "unicorn." Additionally, each line has about the same number of syllables. During our first week, I will review rhyming, syllables, nouns, adjectives, and verbs. There will be a rhyming word search, "I Have, Who Has" game, and virtual scavenger hunt each week. Throughout the course, I will upload lively videos, poetry examples, writing prompts, and helpful handouts. Families can appreciate the variety, creativity, and flexibility in this course. Students will be given examples, encouragement, and support throughout our time together. Some learners may need help with reading, writing, and spelling. So, it would be ideal if there are available resources or adults to help them. But, I will be available and accommodating. I'm excited to connect and create with this great group. Learners often inspire me and each other with their fresh, funny, and interesting ideas. My friendly personality helps facilitate learning and conversations. Here is the schedule. Week 1: Elves and Fairies Week 2: Unicorns and Animals Week 3: Gnomes and Nature Week 4: Witches and Wizards Week 5: Princes and Princesses Week 6: Rainbows and Leprechauns Week 7: Dinosaurs and Dragons Week 8: Space and Aliens Week 9: Scarecrows Week 10: Robots and Inventions Week 11: Toys and Hobbies Week 12: Winter and Snowmen We will use the Outschool classroom to interact, post, and view material. * There are no live meetings for this class. * I know that a lot of learners are busy and live in different time zones. So, I just ask that every learner tries their best to submit at least 1 couplet poem per week. Additionally, learners should give some positive feedback to different students throughout the course. It can be a simple "Good job!" or a more detailed compliment. I strive to make educational spaces safe, enjoyable, and engaging.
Learning Goals
Fundamentally, students will improve their writing and rhyming skills. Additionally, couplets are a good way for learners to demonstrate their creative abilities. Most importantly, I hope that learners will be proud of their poems and progress. Writing is important, and my introductory poetry classes have helped some learners realize that they actually like certain types of writing. Basically, couplets can be a catalyst for growth and success in future English endeavors. Lastly, this class provides opportunities for participants to practice their reading, social, and technology skills. Students will show us their poems via classroom posts. They can type their poems, post pictures of their work, and/or submit videos of them reading their poetry.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
This online poetry class has a secular and creative focus. I like it when learners use their imagination, but I'll also recognize and appreciate scientific facts. Outschool learners do not have to write about things they do not like or believe in (e.g., aliens or magic). A wide array of things are relevant to the themes. For example, one learner may want to write about an imaginary unicorn alien, and that's cool. Furthermore, I'll also praise a space enthusiast who wants to rhyme about Mars. If your family has an issue with a certain topic, then it can be skipped. Your learner(s) can choose an appropriate free choice theme instead. Lastly, I will not specifically mention Halloween, Christmas, or other holidays in any of my videos, handouts, or comments during this course. (I offer other classes that focus on holidays.) However, some learners may choose to include holiday aspects (e.g., their Halloween costumes and Santa's elves in their poems).
Supply List
Learners will need paper, pencils, and an eraser. Some students prefer to mainly type up their work, and that's fine. Feel free to print out the handouts, but they don't have to be printed out. Also, some students like to add color and art to their work. So, they may want to use things like crayons or markers. Lastly, if learners want to include relevant things (like toys or pets) in their posts, that's terrific.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello, my name is Kendall. I've been teaching on Outschool since July 2021, and I've joyfully worked with children for over 10 years. Essentially, I enjoy personalizing educational experiences and facilitating learning in fun ways. I'm an encouraging educator, and I value authenticity, creativity, and diversity. On Outschool, I mainly teach poetry and writing classes. I taught English online to children in other countries for 2 years, and I'm excited to connect with more learners from around the world. I'm TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certified. I've also worked as an English tutor, after-school science instructor, engaging camp counselor, and assistant camp supervisor. Additionally, I've really enjoyed working with children who are autistic, and I have some personal and professional experience with neurodiversity. Notably, I'm grateful for all of the bright and beautiful brains that help make Outschool so cool! :-]
As a lifelong learner, I appreciate how others and education can shape our evolution. I graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) with a BA in Anthropology, and I have an AA in Psychology from a community college. I decided that I want to become a veterinarian later in life, so I've been working on prerequisites that I need for vet school. I love the flexibility and outstanding opportunities that Outschool offers. So, cheers to learning and loving an array of things! Thank you, and I look forward to connecting with you.
