Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
Intermediate - Advanced Level
In this 8 week, Multiday course, students will learn how to draw various facial expressions. This class is for intermediate to advanced art students who have a basic understanding of the proportions of a face and how to draw them. Each week we will work on a new expression and the mechanics of not only how the face moves and shapes itself, but also how to draw it realistically.

Depending on the difficulty of the expression, we may only have the chance to draw an outline of the face. Though, after we have completed the list of facial expressions, we will take the last two classes to learn basic shading and some skin tones.

Each week, we will be looking at a new photo reference of an emotion and spending a few minutes to talk through how to draw it. After this, the teacher will walk the students through the drawing in a step-by-step process to complete the drawing. Throughout the class, we will take breaks to check on the drawings and if the students have any questions or concerns. The instructor will make sure to help point out corrections that need to be made along the way, as well as giving tips and tricks.

Below is a basic timeline of facial expressions that we will be drawing every week.
Week 1: Proportions/ No Expression

Week 3: Sad
Week 4: Laughing

Hello,
My name is Ms. Elizabeth Suriani, and I am a full-time artist from Northern Colorado. I graduated from the University of Wyoming with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a minor in Art History in 2016. While at the University of Wyoming I primarily studied 2D art style, including oil painting and print making. I also studied in Florence, Italy during the fall of 2015 where I studied architectural and figurative drawing, as well as fresco restoration.

Since 2015 I have been teaching art and art history to students ranging from ages 5-17 years old with lessons ranging from basic instructions, all the way to advanced classes and color theory for older students. I love teaching art and am currently teaching two international students in Italy and Thailand.

I have recently returned home from teaching English as a second language in Bangkok, Thailand with students aging from 2-16 years old. I loved working with my students and miss them dearly.
On top of being a full-time artist, I have also started my own jewelry business, as well as teaching English Language to children in China!

When teaching, I love to keep things fun and light. I believe that seriousness doesn’t do a young mind any good when learning art at an early age, it tends to discourage them instead. I want to help my students find art or anything they are passionate about and feel like they have a space to ask questions, experiment, and flourish.
I can’t wait to see you in class!
