Fabulous Phonics for Reading and Misbehaving Letters!
In this ongoing 1:1 class, students will learn the secret stories behind the sometimes silly and misbehaving letters to help them learn to read.
Class Experience
US Grade Kindergarten - 1
Beginner Level
I will be using the UFLI (University of Florida Literacy Institute) manual and resources to teach phonics. It is an explicit and systematic program that provides a solid foundation for reading. It can be used effectively for students who are still learning letter sounds or for those who need intervention at any grade level. A lesson may extend 2-3 days depending on how much is accomplished during our time or how much time your child needs to learn the concept well. Scope and Sequence...
- The student will learn the phonics skills that they need to be able to read and spell. They will have lots of opportunity to read text and write words and sentences that practice the specific phonics concepts that I teach them.
I’ve used this resource for a year at my public school for literacy intervention. I work closely with the students’ classroom teachers and we have seen fantastic results with this explicit and systematic program. It has made a difference for students who were struggling readers. I have used it effectively in grade 1-4. I have not used it in kindergarten but I am willing to experiment with that grade as well.

Homework
Frequency: includedFeedback: includedDetails: There is a ‘take-home’ activity that I will provide for the parents. It is optional but if the parents want to take advantage of it I will teach them how to use it. The ‘homework’ is very easy to do and is a review of the concepts that were taught in the lesson. It will help the child retain what they have learned in the lesson. The ‘take-home’ activity won’t take more than 30 minutes to complete.Assessment
Frequency: includedDetails: Shortly after I begin working with your child I will do a short assessment to inform instruction, to see which phonics skills your child already knows and where there is room for improvement. I’ll do a brief written assessment after the completion of each lesson to see how much your child has retained (not every class - after the full lesson is complete) and to see where we need to recap or go over the concepts that have been taught. I will use this to go at your child’s pace. After the completion of each module (ie. letter sounds or digraphs) I will do another assessment.
Students should know most letter sounds.
Mini whiteboard Dry erase marker Eraser Dice Pencil and Eraser Parents will be asked to print out the relevant materials prior to the lesson: Roll and Read game Decodable story Take-home activity (optional)
