All learners are welcome to join these creative sessions at any time. We begin by discussing the week's topic and reading the themed poetry. During this time, we brainstorm personal stories relating to the topic. The learners will focus on these...
- Based on the Ontario standards: Extend understanding of texts by connecting the ideas in them to their own knowledge and experience, to other familiar texts, and to the world around them.
- Extend understanding of oral texts by connecting, comparing, and contrasting the ideas and information in them to their own knowledge, experience, and insights and to other texts.
- Demonstrate an understanding of appropriate speaking behaviour in a variety of situations, including small and large-group discussions (e.g., . . . make relevant and constructive comments on the contributions of other group members).
- Establish a distinctive voice in their writing appropriate to the subject and audience (e.g., use punctuation, dialogue, and vivid language to create a particular mood or tone).
- Use a range of appropriate elements of effective presentation in the finished product, including print, script, different fonts, graphics, and layout.

Can you believe that I despised poetry when I was young? Unfortunately, it was introduced in such a rigid and dull way that all of its magic was sucked away! Now, I love poetry and write some each week! Of course, I love reading poetry, too, and listening to your poetry. At this point, I have been teaching it for at least eighteen years!

I'm neurodivergent so my classes are creative and inclusive. I am also gentle and encouraging, and learners are welcome to participate in the chat box or orally. The class follows the same format to reduce anxiety. The ages are suggestions.
No prior experience with poetry is required for this class! All are welcome!
4 files available upon enrollmentLearners should have paper, pencils/pens, markers, etc. on hand for each class or be able to open a word processor, etc. on their computer/device during the class to work on their composition.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
The topics in the class will vary depending on the learners in the class and what they bring up, and sensitive subjects may arise. I will allow the learners to express age-appropriate emotions and general experiences, but I will gently guide them back if something beyond that comes up.
I will hold up various poetry books from my collection to encourage the learners to explore similar poetry outside of class. These are books that include the poems and class topics.
