The universe is big and full of so many different galaxies, stars, and cosmic wonders. This class will begin the journey of exploring space by focusing on our the planets, moons, and other celestial objects in our Solar System.

This is an introductory class about astronomy. We will focus on basic descriptions and facts of planets, the sun, and moons. As an introductory course, it is perfect for students who love space and are interested in learning more about our solar system, but don't have a lot of (or any) prior knowledge.

We will discuss...

- The Planets
  - Mercury
  - Venus
  - Earth
  - Mars
  - Jupiter
  - Saturn
  - Uranus
  - Neptune
  - Pluto (with a discussion about whether it is a real planet)
- Moons
  - Our own moon and some of the moons that orbit other planets
- The Asteroid Belt

Some of the topics that we'll focus on are...
- Physical characteristics like size comparisons, colors, and temperatures
- Could you live here? How close to livable is it?
- History behind the names
- When was it discovered? How?
- Can you see it in the night sky?
- The order of the planets

Class Structure:
30 minutes - PowerPoint presentation in lecture style
5 minutes - Pop quiz for learning comprehension
10 minutes - Discussion about which planet is their favorite and why? If they could travel to one of the planets, which one would they want to see? If you could name a new planet, what would you name it?

Learning Goals

Students will be able to name all of the planets in our solar system. They will also learn about other cosmic objects in our Solar System like the sun, moons, and the asteroid belt.

Hello! What do you call a singer produced by Medusa? A rockstar.

My name is Elizabeth. I teach classes about Greek Mythology, History, Astronomy, and Literature.

I have a master's and bachelor's in English literature & writing, and I also have a TEFL certification. I have a lot of experience tutoring students in literature, writing, and history. And I’ve also volunteered as an ESL teacher at a local community college. Aside from my professional experience, my favorite subjects to teach are also my greatest personal interests and passions in life, which is why I love to teach classes about them!

Now I want to flashback to when I was a student… Throughout my years at school, the most memorable classes were the ones with teachers who were really passionate about the subjects they were teaching and reflected that passion into every lesson. They made learning fun, and that's something I value as I create and teach my own classes.

My goal as a teacher is to create a welcoming, fun learning environment with courses that spark joy and excitement in students, both in class and outside of it. Whether they’re discussing which greek god they would be a demigod child of, deciding which British queen is their favorite, or marveling at the mythology of the stars… I want students to walk away with new knowledge, confidence, AND passion in what they’ve learned!
