US Grade 5 - 8
This course is designed to provide a comprehensive coverage of the concepts in a Pre-Algebra 1 course. This is Part 3 and will focus on the areas of Linear and Nonlinear Functions, and Real Numbers. Students will apply previous mathematical experiences to solve real world problems. Every class will follow a similar outline. All classes will begin with a short warm up. This could be skills that they may have previously learned before taking this course, or those that we have just reviewed. After the warm up, the topic will be introduced. The class will follow and I do, We do, you do format. This means, I will review the first few examples. Then we will complete a few examples together and then we will end with a them completing examples independently. There will be homework at the end of each class and it will be due before the start of the next class. Please note this class will run 3 days a week for 8 weeks. This class will cover chapters 8 - 10. Part 1 covered chapters 1-3 and Part 2 covered chapters 4 - 7. The topics are as follows: Chapter 9: Powers and Nonlinear Functions Class 1: Powers and Exponents Class 2: Prime Factorization Class 3: Multiplying and Dividing Monomials Class 4: Negative Exponents Class 5: Mid Chapter Review Class 6: Scientific Notation Class 7: Powers of Monomials Class 8: Linear and Nonlinear Functions Class 9: Quadratic Functions Class 10: Cubic and Exponential Functions Class 11: Review and practice Chapter 10: Real Numbers and Right Triangles Class 12: Square and Square roots Class 13: The Real Number System Class 14: Triangles Class 15: Pythagorean Theorem Class 16: The Distance Formula Class 17: Special Right Triangles Class 18: Practice and Review Chapter 11: Distance and Angle Class 19: Angle an Line Relationships Class 20: Congruent Triangles Class 21: Rotations Class 22: Quadrilaterals and Polygons Class 23: Mid Chapter Review Class 24: Area of Parallelograms, Triangles Class 25: Circles and Circumference, Area of Circles Class 26: Area of Composite Figures Class 27: Review and Practice

Supply List
Most materials will be provided by the instructor. This will include worksheets and assignments needed to review. Students will need access to a printer to print notes and assignments. A basic calculator is needed (TI-30x) or a graphing calculator (TI-84). If students have access to a smart phone or tablet they can use a calculator app similar to Graphing Calc 2. Students should also have blank paper (lined or unlined) for taking notes and writing examples, graph paper for the graphing sections. A whiteboard and dry erase markers would also be beneficial for interactive reviews.
