Exploring Math: Semester Class Aligned to Common Core Standards for Grade 3 and Grade 4
Class experience
Exploring Math is an 8-week semester course that includes daily 55-minute sessions for four days each week. Each session provides children opportunities to develop problem-solving and higher level thinking skills, to build an understanding of mathematics with age-appropriate activities using “hands-on” materials, and to instill an appreciation and love for mathematics. This course is designed for children beginning grade three or grade 4 in the 2020-2021 school year. Topics included in the...
1. Children will use the four operations with multi-digit whole numbers to solve mathematical and real-life problems using properties of operations, order of operation, relationship between the operations, and various strategies. 2. Children will describe a context for multiplication and division of expressions of multi-digit whole numbers. 3. Children will explain the meaning of the numerator and denominator in proper and improper fractions and mixed numbers. 4. Children will compare fractions and recognize and generate equivalent fractions. 5. Children will add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers with like denominators by replacing with equivalent fractions, when needed to solve mathematical and real-life problems. 6. Children will solve mathematical and real-life problems involving fractions and mixed numbers. 7. Children will solve mathematical and real-life problems involving measurement, time, area, perimeter, and volume. 8. Children will represent and interpret data and create a scaled picture graph and a scaled bar graph for data. 8. Children will draw and identify points, lines (perpendicular, intersecting, parallel) rays, angels (right, acute, obtuse), and lines of symmetry.
