Beginner Level
In this 40-minute class, young artists will learn how to create a unique paper collage! The learners will follow step-by-step instructions at the beginning of the lesson. They will need several pieces of different color paper (I recommend about five sheets of different colors of paper), scissors, glue (bottle or stick), and a pencil for this lesson. The learner must have previous experience with using scissors safely. ***This is a small group class; great for learners who like a smaller group. The class section will not cancel due to low enrollment; I will still hold a class with one learner.*** First, the class will begin with a teacher-led review of lines and shapes. Next, we will discuss and draw the different lines and shapes on the pieces of color paper (or learners can cut the paper without drawing first, whichever way they prefer). The teacher will give a safety review of how to use scissors correctly and the easiest way to place glue on the collage's shapes. The teacher will discuss and demonstrate tips on creating a good composition layout (places to place the cut pieces to work well). Once the learners are ready to cut out the shapes and lines, they can begin and lay out the pieces on the base paper. Learners are encouraged to add additional unique designs and creative ideas that they imagine. During the lesson, the teacher will help any learner that would like assistance. Learners are always welcome to ask questions throughout class time and will have an opportunity to share their abstract collages with their peers. This is an encouraging, relaxed environment that focuses on creativity. *Please note: Learnerss naturally work at different paces. Some learners might complete their entire drawing (details included) within the 40 minutes time period. Others might want to keep adding details after the class is over. The art vocabulary that we will be discussing throughout the lesson: Lines: straight, wavy, zigzag, spiral, curved Shapes: circle, square, triangle, oval, rectangle, organic shapes Collages: gluing paper on paper Composition: arranging their cut paper pieces to visually work well together Patterns: repeating lines, shapes, colors
