Class Experience

In this class, we will explore the solar system. We'll take a look at the 8 different planets and other elements in our solar system.
The class will be lectured based and there will be opportunities to engage in the class with activities, light discussion, and games as time allows. Being quiet myself, I understand that some students may also be quiet or shy so they can engage in light discussion if and when they feel comfortable doing so.

We will cover the following topics:

Week 1 Beyond The Earth: Students will learn about the solar system and what it is made up of. They will also get familiar with
the Scratch interface in preparation for our solar system coding project.

Week 2 All About The Sun: Students will be able to identify the importance of the Sun and explain how it is the center of the
    Solar system.

Week 3 Mercury and Venus: Students will be able to describe Mercury and Venus and it's characteristics.

Week 4 Our Planet Earth: Students will be able to describe the Earth and how it's different than the other planets.

Week 5 Mars and Jupiter: Students will learn about gas giants and terrestrial planets.

Week 6 Saturn, Uranus and Neptune: Students will learn about the classification of planets and it's differences.

Week 7 Pluto: Students will learn about dwarf planets and why Pluto is considered a dwarf planet.

Week 8 Earth's Moon: Students will learn about the Earth's Moon and its' phases.

Week 9 Other Moon's and Elements: Students will be able to explain what a moon is and identify other elements in
     our solar system.

Week 10 Stars and Black Holes: Students will be able to identify the various types of stars, explain black holes and
     how they are formed.

As we cover the planets, we will spend time with activities and/or building our Solar System using the Scratch interface so students will also gain some basic programming skills.

Learning Goals

By the end of this course, the student will have a good understanding of the solar system. They will have completed activities and a programming project to enjoy that will help them to retain and reinforce their knowledge.

They will...
•	Learn new vocabulary
•	Learn about the Solar System and it's planets
•	Discover other elements within the Solar System
•	Get a basic understanding of the Scratch programming interface
•	Create an animated program of the solar system using Scratch

Supply List
An internet connection, laptop or desktop computer is required to complete the Scratch Solar System project. Students will be given a link during the first class and we will walk through setting up their free Scratch account. As we walk through the setup, it is suggested that a parent be present to assist if needed. We will also have a lab that will include Oreo cookies. Students will be told when they should bring Oreos to class.

Hi! My name is Juanita Dailey. I am super excited to now be an Outschool teacher!!! The types of classes I am looking to teach will revolve around technology such as programming, creating videos, and Zumba fitness classes.

I have a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Information Management with a concentration in Systems Programming. I also have an MBA with a concentration in Project Management. I have a teaching certificate in ESL and also have various Zumba fitness certifications.

I have over 15 years of teaching experience at the university level and with kids ranging in ages 4 - 12 years old. I also have over 15 years of experience as a Systems Analyst, Software Engineer and Web Designer. I've taught programming classes, ESL and Zumba Fitness.

I love the tech side of things, playing around with creating videos and fitness! My teaching philosophy is that learning should be fun. When learning is fun, this makes it easier for the student to learn and to cultivate a love of learning. I can't wait to be apart of your child's learning experience to help them develop their creativity, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills. We're going to have a blast!

Something fun about me is that I love adventure so sometimes you may find me out paragliding or white water rafting for outdoor activities. Indoors, I enjoy playing my arcade games such as Ms. Pacman and putting my ball on our indoor putting green.
