Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
Boat Science and Math: How does the height of a boat’s walls affect the number of passengers it can hold? We will learn about density and conduct a controlled experiment together using aluminum foil for boats, a bowl with water, pennies for passengers, and rulers for measuring. After writing down our results in a chart, we will graph them together on a coordinate plane. Finally, we will analyze our graphs and have a discussion. Optional extension activities include testing other variables that affect boat capacity, such as boat material, boat shape, water salinity, etc.

Recommended prerequisite knowledge includes:
- Basic decimals or fractions (0.5 or 1/2 for instance)
-Measuring length with centimeters
-Fluent writing skills
-Folding aluminum and measuring with a ruler
-Counting up to 50
-Concept of basic division (Density= Mass/Volume)
-Basic graphing

Learning Goals

Students will learn how to:
- Conduct a controlled experiment
-Record and graph results
-Interpret results based on scientific concepts
learning goal
