Expanded Subtraction: Learn and Practise through Games with Boris the Sloth
In this one-off lesson, one-to-one lesson, students will develop a deeper understanding of why borrowing is necessary for subtraction. Students will be able to master the skills involved through modelling and repetition and from playing games.

During the first half of the session, I will first set a subtraction calculation (3-digit subtract a 3-digit number) like in my photo, to see what the children already know. I will model the expanded method (see my photo) explaining the benefits of the model and the how it represents 'real-maths' rather than just a quick way to solve a problem. I have been a teacher in the UK for 22 years and been a maths leader for over 12 years including working for White Rose (a leading Maths Hub in the UK supporting teachers and parents). My approach is similar to the White Rose approach which intwines with educational theories and concepts including metacognitive awareness and retrieval practice: I believe the more a child thinks about the skills that they use and understands numbers and practises a skill the more it's embedded in their memory.
