What's included
3 live meetings
4 hrs 15 mins in-class hoursHomework
2-4 hours per week. There will be 2 hours of homework after each tutoring session. I think this will get most of the assignments near completion, but there will probably still be some work after class to finish things up.Assessment
Verbal self-assessment. Do you feel more confident than you did before, and can you explain to me what you understand now?Class Experience
This series of tutoring sessions has the goal of helping the learner complete two summer art assignments, one on using color, and one on using materials in unconventional ways. We will schedule 3 sessions. Before class, please do the following homework assignment. I recommend spending about 2 hours on this. Pre-Class Homework: Practice what we did in our first color theory class: swatching primary and secondary colors with gentle blends of pencil layers, and blending colors with their opposites. Try this on a few different paper textures (smoother and rougher). If you have a few different kinds of eraser or colored pencil, too, experiment with those and decide which ones you like to use and which ones to put back in the drawer. I call this "interviewing your tools." Session 1: The first session will be split in two parts. First, we we'll work on drawing and shading a small practice picture of a banana, working together and using mostly the complementary colors of yellow and purple. (I will provide a photo reference ahead of time.) Then, we'll talk about some ideas for the unconventional materials class. I'll share a few images from artists who work in collage, sculpture, mixed media, installation, environment, etc. We'll discuss how each artist is using __ material in a __ way, and we'll brainstorm on that and make some notes and thumbnail sketch ideas for experimentation. There will be 2 homework assignments after Session 1. I recommend about an hour for each. Assignment 1: Using the colors and materials and processes we learned from drawing the practice banana, spend an hour drawing a larger banana and laying in some areas of color. (Goal to have the color assignment 1/3 done before session 2) Assignment 2: 6 thumbnail sketches and gathering some supplies for mixed media experimentation, TBD based on our planning discussion in Session 1. Session 2: We'll check in on progress for the colored pencil art first, and work on it together for awhile. Then we'll work on the unconventional materials class. Might get messy (paint, glue, etc.) Assignment 3 & 4: One more hour of progress on the drawing and the mixed media project. Session 3: Continued progress and Q&A on both assignments.
Learning Goals
The goal of this private tutoring series is to help the learner gain confidence and skills to complete two summer art school assignments.
Other Details
Supply List
We'll use the same colored pencil supplies from our first class, though if you can get a 12-color Prismacolor pencil set, that would be an easier tool to use. The mixed media supply list is TBD based on our Session 1 brainstorming, but it might require a bit of a rummage through your supplies including maybe glue, repurposed stuff, scissors, paint, etc.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
I'm Valerie, and I'm a lifelong freelance artist and entrepreneur. Teaching and mentoring is so fun for me because I like figuring out how to make things and explaining how they work. I love seeing what you figure out, too!
I'm a 2004 BFA graduate in Set Design from Carnegie Mellon University's School of Drama. I've had a worldwide career working backstage for touring theaters, and I started a scenic art studio that employs dozens of artists in NYC. At the moment, I'm at the beginning of a new illustration career while continuing to paint scenery for Broadway shows.
I have lots of insights to offer about art skills & techniques, portfolio development, project planning, opening a small business, and supporting yourself in the gig economy. So much of what I've learned has been through open conversations with people whose work I admired, and it's important to me to share my experience and continue that chain of valuable mentoring.
I'm just getting started with Outschool, and I'm particularly interested in one-on-one lessons for motivated artists and designers. Plus, you'll get a sneak peek into whatever I'm working on in my studio.
