This introductory survey of the main themes in German history since 1815 focuses on the German unification that occurred from 1864 to 1871, Germany’s role in World War I and World War II, and the creation and political development of two Germanies that occurred from the late 1940s until their reunification in the year 1990. 1. This first session will introduce the overall scope of this course including German geography and geopolitics. It will also explain how the history of Germany has shaped the modern world. Also, it will cover the origins of the German confederation of thirty-nine states. 2. The second session will look at causes and consequences of remarkable events such as the revolutionary year of 1848 in German states and the unification of Germany under the leadership of Prussia. 3. The third session will deal with the reign of German emperors, the Hohenzollerns, from 1871 to 1918 and with the Weimar Republic, 1918 - 1933. 4. This final session will examine the creation of the Nazi dictatorship, the coming of the Second World War, the establishment of two German states and their role during the Cold War and the process of German reunification in 1990.
Learning Goals
In this course, the students will master significant details and interpretations of German history from the post-Napoleonic Europe to the German reunification in 1990 in which East and West Germany once again became one country. They will also learn how to articulate significant questions and become a clearer thinker.
