Writing an essay does not have to be a difficult task; however, many kids struggle when attempting to write essays that will meet academic and testing standards. As an instructional designer and certified teacher, I have taken the time to break down the steps needed to write an essay in a way that is easy for kids ages 8-12 years old to understand and follow along. Learners will get the opportunity to master small and easy steps before moving on to more complicated writing tasks. What will be taught? Students will learn to write an informative and an opinion essay that meets or exceeds testing standards. What topics will you cover? This class will cover the essay writing process. Students will learn a different topic each day until they have a full written essay by the end of the camp. Weekly Lessons: Week #1 Day 1 - What is an Essay Anyway? and Analyzing Essay Prompts Day 2 - Using Text Sources and Writing a Thesis Statement Day 3 - The Planning Sheet Day 4 - Writing an Interesting Introduction Figurative language and parts of speech mini lessons may be included when necessary. Week# 2 Day 1 - Selecting the Evidence and Using Elaboration Day 2- Writing the Body of the Essay Day 3- Writing a Captivating Conclusion Day 4- Proofreading and Editing How is your class structured? Students will come to class ready with their printed materials. Students will submit assignments using the features in the Outschool classroom, such file submissions and posting comments. Any required experience or knowledge learners need? Students should read at a third grade level at a minimum and know how to write a sentence in order to be successful in this class.
Learning Goals
When given a writing prompt or topic, 4th grade students will use the prescribed writing process to draft a five-paragraph essay containing an introduction, 3 body paragraphs, and a conclusion during the prescribed time of 120 minutes and using grammatically correct sentences.
