This self-paced course will help learners understand the importance of why we feed horses the way we do as well as common feeds and feeding practices. Learners are encouraged to share and ask questions in the online classroom. PLEASE NOTE: No specific medical or nutritional advice can be given about a specific horse. If you have specific questions, please consult your veterinarian or nutritionist.

over 4 WeeksLesson 1:
Digestive system overview and why does that matter?
A brief overview of the equine digestive system will start us off so that learners will be able to understand the basics of why we feed horses the way we do. Learners will share what they know about feeding practices if anything. 1 assignment
Lesson 2:
Types of roughage and concentrates (grains)
Types of roughage, How to know good hay from bad hay, Types of concentrates (grains). Learners will be shown a variety of photos of types for hays, and grains to practice identifying them. We will also discuss how to read a commercial feed bag label to learn about what nutrition is provided. 1 assignment
Lesson 3:
The equine menu
The equine menu! Let’s help to develop a menu for a variety of horses including a foal, a horse at work, a pony who is not ridden much, and a race horse. Additional examples will be provided if time allows. 1 assignment
Lesson 4:
Supplements, storing grain and wrap up
When or why do horses need supplements? How do we need to store hay and concentrates to make sure they stay fresh and good for our horse’s diet?
We will wrap up this course with any questions and feedback on the class from learners. 1 assignment

Supply List

I am a certified veterinary technician and have bred, raised, trained and shown horses for many years. I have a MEd from Colorado State University and a Master of Veterinary Education (MVEd) from Lincoln Memorial University’s School of Veterinary Medicine.
I have been teaching at local community colleges in veterinary Assistant Programs and a variety of Veterinary Science programs for grades 3-5, 6-8, and high school. I also teach at a private university in an equine studies program.
Along with that, I am also a homeschool mom! At home, my family has 2 mini horses, a Paint Horse, 4 Nigerian dwarf goats, 6 chickens and 4 cats!
I am absolutely passionate about sharing my experience and love for animals and Equine and veterinary sciences with others and look forward to helping your learner explore the possibilities!
