INFORMAL: My assessments will be in their ability to focus and pay attention in class, offer constructive critiques to peers and following my instructions. I want the children to feel free to make mistakes and learn from them. I want to help my students to find their confidence and take pride in what the create in my class. Art expression allows us to create what's pleasing to ourselves.Class Experience
(SEL)Social and Emotional Learning Teaching empathy, Self-management and Self-awareness. I will share screen to show a video appropriate to our discussion. Students will create or design their own positive affirmations and discuss the importance of how you both see yourself and speak concerning yourself (organizing your thoughts, goal setting and coping mechanisms, anger management and battling self- sabotaging behaviors while mitigating stress). Student will decide the one sentence affirmation they would like to write. Put that affirmation on a separate piece of paper or note card. Then the student would then design a decorative border to put around the affirmation card. We'll do at least 2 to 3 of these for practice. Students will be allowed to add additional decorative elements like stencil, stickers or color with markers or crayons as they please. It's true...you're always talking to yourself. Be careful of what you're saying, because you're listening! Essential questions we could explore: Why is it important to guard our mouths and minds against what we say and what we think? Can learning to write down or create your own positive affirmations help improve what we say, which improves how we think, which in turn improves our actions ? Why is having a positive attitude key to success? Does a positive attitude really make a difference? Can positive thinking help you to have more confidence, improve your mood, and even reduce the likelihood of developing conditions such as hypertension, depression or other stress-related disorders? I'm very engaged with my students and I love to give them a voice and to create a positive atmosphere for self discovery and the possibility of changing negative thoughts or behavior and redirecting by teaching skills or techniques that will be better for the child.
Learning Goals
Program Focus: We will discuss the power of positive affirmations and the importance of canceling out negative messages not only embedded into our minds by others, but the negative messages we send to ourselves.
This type of self-messaging can encourage self-confidence, self-esteem and self-love empowering us to believe in ourselves. We know that it is possible to “have” or “become” what we say, when we sincerely begin to believe in ourselves and our capabilities!
Affirmations can help in calming the mind, teaching kindness and compassion and building healthy relationships with their friends and family. The children will use stock or construction paper, markers and other craft supplies (stencils, stickers etc.) to create at least 2 or 3 of their own positive affirmations cards, to help keep them motivated and on the right thought-track. Sometimes we can play negative messages in our own heads and positive affirmations (thoughts) help us to erase those negative messages and replace them with those that will empower us to live our best lives!

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am an Enrichment Program Director with my own 501c3 and LLC and a SEL Art Instructor with local after school and summer camp agencies. I regularly work with children using various art mediums and art related curriculum to teach (SEL) Social Emotional Learning competencies and 21st Century Life Skills. Art can also be very therapeutic and relaxing and helps to ease tensions or frustrations that a child may not otherwise be able to articulate. I have over 30 years experience working with youth and teens and have studied both Art Theory/History, Bachelors level Interior Design, I have my Bachelors in Organizational Leadership and I'm a Master's candidate for my MA in SEL (10/2023). As an educator, I love to see children excited over their own exploration and self discovery. I've seen children say they couldn't do this or couldn't do that, and with some patient coaching achieve incredible things!
