Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 5
Prepare for fifth grade language arts with this unique summer bridge class! If your learner wants to have that extra edge going into fifth grade, this the class you're looking for. We will be reading a really fun book and doing daily writing.

Each session will be organized as follows:
-Quick icebreaker to get warmed up and ready to participate
-Discuss the assigned reading
-Writing lesson
-Guided writing practice
-Share writing (time permitting; always optional)

On the last day, we will play a Kahoot game to review and celebrate the end of the book.

We will be reading "Stick Dog" (the original book, #1 in the series) by Tom Watson. This book is likely available at your local library, or you may choose to purchase your own copy. You can even watch the author read the entire book on youtube.

While many learners will be able to read this book independently, please do not hesitate to use audio books if that helps your learner stay focused. And actually... you might just want to read it to them. It is one of the funniest books I have read, and I think you may enjoy it as much as your learner will!

Reading will take place outside of class, so we can devote class time to discussion. This guided reading strategy is known to improve reading comprehension and learner engagement with the book.

In addition to reading a little each day, we will spend some time each day writing. We will work on the following writing skills: description, summary, dialogue, response to literature, and critique. Both formal paragraph writing and informal freewriting will be practiced. We will start all writing assignments during class time, but writing will need to be completed outside of class. All writing assignments will receive personalized feedback by the instructor.

I will do my best to differentiate instruction by making modifications for learners who need more of a challenge or who need more support. If the assignments seem too difficult or too easy, please let me know that you are interested in modifications. I love working with parents to make sure that their child's individual needs are being met.
