Class Experience

US Grade 7 - 11
This is a private, one-on-one tutoring session designed to provide support to learners who are currently looking to support or to expand their English writing and vocabulary skills. Please note that this is not intended to be an English-as-a-second language session, so learners who are looking for private ESL instruction should look elsewhere. Having said that, learners whose first language may not be English are most welcome, provided they have achieved a basic level of fluency. These sessions are also not for learners who are looking to have private English classes. These are tutoring sessions designed to support current classwork or English study, and so learners are expected to already have some experience with essay writing and basic English grammar.

Sessions will be customized to match each learner's needs or preferences, and learners of all levels are welcome. These sessions are intended to provide support to learners who are enrolled in an English class, but who find that they may benefit from extra assistance in building their vocabulary, writing essays, and improving their grammar. For learners who are particularly interested in increasing their vocabulary, we will work to achieve this through etymological work, as I believe that working with Greek and Latin roots is a powerful way to increase vocabulary.

Though I am happy to help a learner to work through a homework assignment or to prepare for a test, my primary goal is to assist learners in developing a deeper understanding of the English language and how it can be used to construct powerful written arguments. I do not "teach" a straightforward way of writing an essay, for example; rather, we work on the skills that are most important in constructing analytical essays and creating persuasive arguments. Learning how to analyze supportive texts, learning more about rhetorical devices/figures of speech, and working to ensure that learners have a strong grasp of English grammar are all important components of essay writing. Together, we can work to identify any areas in which the learner may be struggling, and--also together!--we can work to address these areas and to build a stronger understanding of many aspects of the English language.

I have been tutoring for around twenty years, and I love working with learners in a one-on-one setting. Though I am first and foremost a Latin language and literature teacher, I have offered English tutoring in person for many years, and I am pleased to be offering it here on Outschool. To know Latin is to know English grammar better than one would think possible, and I frequently teach etymology lessons in my Latin classes (I also offer an ongoing etymology class here on Outschool). As a teacher of upper level Latin literature classes, including AP Latin, I have extensive experience in assisting learners in writing and refining analytical essays (in English!). I am also a writer in my non-Outschool life, and have years of experience in many different forms of writing.

In order to get the most out of our time together, I encourage parents and learners to communicate with me via message regarding any particular areas in which learners are desiring support, and I ask that this be done prior to our first session.
I am happy to offer single sections to learners, but I am also happy to create longer sections (these sections could stretch across additional weeks or months; there's a lot of flexibility). This course listing may have some public sections listed, but it is primarily offered upon request; if you are interested in a session, please contact me with your preferences and availability, and I will get back to you! Requests for a session that begins in less than 24 hours may or may not be able to be accommodated. Though this course is listed for 12-17 year olds, older or younger learners are welcomed--simply let me know when making a scheduling request.

To know Latin (and particularly, to teach it) is to know English grammar better than one would think possible, and I frequently teach etymology lessons in my Latin classes (I also offer an ongoing etymology class here on Outschool). Though I do teach Latin courses on Outschool, I also worked for years in a private school as a teacher of upper level Latin literature classes, including AP Latin. I have extensive experience in assisting learners in writing and refining analytical essays (in English!). Most of my AP Latin students have gone on to achieve high scores on the exam itself, and my AP learners (as well as some of my upper level Latin literature students) can tell you of how they both loved and feared my red editing pen. I am a huge proponent of helping learners to think, and as such, I am always encouraging them to think of the questions that they need to ask themselves in order to write cogent, eloquent, and well-supported essays and papers. I am also a writer in my non-Outschool life, and have years of experience in many different forms of writing.
