CLASS INFORMATION This class covers developing vocabulary, building sentence structure, advancing punctuation from basic to more sophisticated and getting to grips with the comprehension skills required to answer questions effectively. It provides support and guidance in the areas of SPAG (spelling, punctuation and grammar - I have a forthcoming class that covers these areas in more depth), writing and reading. TOPICS The topics outlined in the syllabus, include focusing on vocabulary - the importance of words and how to use them to good effect in their writing. We will then focus on sentence structure and those elements that make sentences interesting and have greater impact - which lays the foundations for longer written pieces. Punctuating sentences and text correctly will be the next focus, helping students to use more 'sophisticated' punctuation - what they are and how to use them correctly. Having upgraded their writing, the class then focuses on longer writing tasks, involving paragraphing and using their newly acquired skills to produce excellent written pieces. The final section of the class delves into comprehensions. Here we will consider the different types of comprehension questions used within exam papers and how to answer these to full effect to gain maximum marks. STRUCTURE There will be 2 lessons a week with homework to reinforce what was taught in the lesson. The class has mainly a teacher-lead style with the use of visual aids and questions to allow opportunities to discuss, share and participate. Additional resources to help consolidate learning for certain topics will also be made available. GRADING / REPORTING Weekly notes will be sent to inform you of how the lessons went and provide feedback regarding contributions and how well your child did in the lesson. This will let you know of the areas that require further practice, of which I will provide resources to support. At the end of the 12 weeks, I will provide an individual report for parents regarding the students' progress throughout the class. To achieve this, I will need all homework to be turned in on a weekly basis.
