Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
Latin and classical Greek are just as important to early vocabulary development as phonics is to reading. Just as phonics helps children figure out what words are, Latin and Greek help them figure out what words mean, which will give them the ability to use the words well.

Students will learn a Latin or Greek root word, its pronunciation, and its meaning in each class session. We will then examine how it pertains to the English language by breaking down a list of words into their derivations. We will also learn the short, literal meaning of those words through discussions, videos, and images. Various core subject topics will be taught, such as science or history, depending on the word of the day.

The ongoing course consists of learning Greek root words, which mix and match and recur in various combinations in English derivatives, Latin prefixes and verbs, some Latin words for parts of the body, Latin words for cardinal numbers 1-10, 100 and 1,000, some pairs of Greek and Latin words with the same English meaning.

The derivative definitions are as literal as possible to show the direct connection with the meaning of the original Latin or Greek word. All of the derivations will be related in some traceable way to the root concept.

This course will help students with reading, writing, spelling, and S.A.T. scores.
