Emotions Craft: Many Faces of Me
Class experience
Learners will be instructed through the process of making an emotions portfolio. I will model how to make cut-outs in a folder, observe and sketch facial expressions, and draw things that represent our personal experiences of: happiness, anger and sadness. Learners will be guided to reflect on and draw their emotional experiences through questions such as: What makes you feel happy? What color feels happy for you? Can you remember a moment when you felt happy? Learners will have the...
One important part of emotional regulation is knowing that emotions are not permanent. Often, when we feel an overwhelming emotion, we think that we ARE that emotion, and we forget that we are more than just that one feeling. Learners will gain perspective by seeing in a tangible way that their emotions are multi-faceted, and that they are more than just sadness, or just anger. By changing the papers in their portfolio, they will see that their emotions are also constantly shifting. Learners will be encouraged to make mindful connections between the emotion's name, how it feels on our faces, and what unique experiences or likes/dislikes we associate with those feelings. Learners will walk away with a tool for communicating their emotions with caregivers.
My education and training in psychology gave me a unique understanding of emotional development. I began developing my own hands-on resources to help my own young children develop their emotional intelligence alongside traditional academic intelligence. I broadened my reach when I began teaching hundreds of other students online. I hope you enjoy these tools as much as we have!
