Class Experience

In this One-Time class, the learner's reading level will be assessed in the following method:
-Present a leveled book, pre-determined based on a parent questionnaire
-Pre-reading discussion
-Book reading
-Post reading discussion

The book level will be altered and fine-tuned throughout the class based on successes and difficulties in the following areas:
- Word knowledge (automaticity and sight words)
-Phonemic Awareness (knowledge of sounds)
-Phonics (knowledge of how sounds work together)
-Reading Strategies (how to read an unfamiliar word and how to comprehend details)
-Fluency (pace, phrasing, expression)
-Comprehension (retell)

The results will be contained in a full report in each of the above areas. Recommendations will be made including book level, correlating grade level, successes and struggles in each area, and suggested areas of focus. Focus areas will be listed in suggested chronological order for future learning success.

Before ending the class, I will discuss the basic results with the learner by praising accomplishments, explaining what I feel will help them within their instructional reading level, and why the suggested skill is important to practice.

*A questionnaire will be sent to the guardian upon sign-up and must be completed at least 48 hours prior to class so the proper materials can be gathered. This is important in determining the tentative starting book level.

*This class is listed as 45 minutes, but may be shorter or longer depending on successes and difficulties during reading.
*If the class requires longer than 1 hour, another meeting may be necessary (at a lesser rate). If possible, I will recommend a tentative level and a suggested focus to use until the next meeting. This will be given in a message to the parent. (The full report will be sent once the final level has been found.) The new meeting link will be sent through a parent message. The second class will ONLY be necessary if it is not possible to find a concrete level within 1 hour.

*Follow-up assessments are suggested every 4-6 weeks to determine the learners progress and recommend updated skills to practice. These follow-ups are at a lesser cost and will last approximately 30 minutes.

*The class video will not be posted due to copyright laws and requirements.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have assessed students for their reading levels from Kindergarten through 5th grade for 21 years and have been successful with using the testing results to drive guided reading lessons. My detailed assessment observations have helped to increase the students' reading levels to bring them up to and often past the expected level for their age group.
I regularly write detailed assessment results and observations for child study teams to assist in giving a full picture of a child's abilities.
