What's included

4 hrs 30 mins in-class hoursHomework
1-2 hours per week. Each week, students will be asked to work on a new short story based on that week's lesson. Students will post their story to the classroom at least twenty-four hours before the following week's class! If students do not post their work on time, we will be unable to discuss their work in class-- parents, please help me ensure your students have the best learning experience by encouraging them to post their work on time.Class Experience

𝗝𝗼𝗶𝗻 𝘂𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀!✏️ We'll discuss the elements and structure of a story, how to get the details from your brain onto the paper, and how to find and use exciting words to make your story POP. Students will be encouraged to have fun and treat writing as a form of play. This is a great, gentle class to introduce younger students to the concept of creative writing-- or to remind reluctant writers that not all writing has to be academic in nature! Each week, students will participate in a lesson focused on different elements of writing. They'll then apply this knowledge as they work on a new short story each week! ✏️ 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗰𝘀: Week One: The basics-- what are the ingredients and what is the recipe for your story? Week Two: Details-- getting the "movie" in your head onto the paper. Week Three: Writer's block and how to conquer it! Week Four: Adding powerful, specific words to make your story POP. Week Five: Editing-- how to check your spelling and grammar without freaking out! Week Six: Sharing our finished stories and discussing where to go next as writers ✏️ 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀: Five minutes: Welcome and introduction to the day's lesson Ten minutes: Students are invited-- 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘥-- to read aloud their favorite part of the story the finished over the previous week. Twenty minutes: The teacher will teach this week's lesson. Ten minutes: Students will spend ten minutes quietly writing on their new story! Students will then finish their own stories outside of class time, so they're able to spend as much time as they like on them. These stories do not 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 to be turned in, but if they are sent to the teacher, we'll be able to provide written feedback! Students will finish this class having completed five short stories, as well as the tools to write many more.
Learning Goals
Students will create five unique short stories over the course of the class.
Students will understand foundational creative writing concepts, like structure, character, and editing.

Parental Guidance
While students will be encouraged to write about whatever excites or inspires them, this is generally a low violence, high charm/delight type of class.
Below are my general classroom rules and policies. These will also be explained to students when we begin class!
-For everyone's safety, and to ensure an engaging and social experience, students are required to have working microphones and video for the entirety of this class, positioned such that we can both hear and see them.
-Students are asked not to use filters or virtual backgrounds-- though if there is an important reason to use a virtual background, please just let me know ahead of time that your student will be using one (no questions asked!).
-Students will be asked to introduce themselves by sharing their name, pronoun, and a favorite book.
-The Zoom text chat is set to "host only", meaning students can chat with me, but not to one another or the entire classroom.
