🦉 Welcome to the 3rd and 4th grade *THIS WILL BE ON THE TEST* a TEST PREP Class Series! Created by Lauren Smith, a K-12 professional with a Masters in Instructional Design, this program aligns with grade-level B.E.S.T. reading standards to boost reading comprehension and critical thinking skills. Each week, students will explore exciting nonfiction texts on topics like African geography, pterosaurs, and wildlife conservation. Through fun games, guided reading, and discussions, students will practice essential reading strategies to improve fluency and comprehension. Weekly topics are tailored to students' interests, and each session includes interactive worksheets for skill practice. This class is perfect for young learners in 3rd and 4th grade, this class will make reading fun for your learner! 📖 Class Syllabus: Text selections are subject to change based on the ability level of each group. 📆 Week 1 Geography in Africa Social Studies: Geography, Societies & Culture Words: 301 Lexile: 900L Nonfiction ------------------------------------------------ 📆 Week 2 When Pterosaurs Took Flight Words: 295 Lexile: 790L Nonfiction ------------------------------------------------ 📆 Week 3 Helping the Fastest Land Animal in the United States Words: 570 Lexile: 1020L Nonfiction ------------------------------------------------ 📆 Week 4 Bats Need Our Help! Words: 519 Lexile: 920L Nonfiction ------------------------------------------------ 🌟 Weekly Topics are all related to cross curricular concepts that are relevant to 3rd and 4th graders, text selections may change depending on students' interest inventory. How is your class structured? First, the teacher will teach the topic of the week. Then, students will take turns reading a passage provided by the teacher. The teacher will hold a discussion to help develop oral language and each student will complete an online worksheet which will be automatically graded. Feedback will be provided to students at the end of class and to parents upon request. Reading passages will be selected from the Readworks® inventory with permission and licensing and authorization from the author. Any required experience or knowledge learners need? Students in this class must be entering/in 3rd or 4th grade.
Learning Goals
Students will identify and explain key concepts related to the topics of geography, social studies, and science by reading fiction and nonfiction texts.
Students will use specific reading strategies (such as summarizing, questioning, and making inferences) to improve comprehension and retention of the weekly reading passages.

Pre-Requisites
Students who join this class should read at least at a 3rd grade level.

Students will need to bring a pencil and paper to class. Students will need to access Google Forms and Readwords on a separate window in order to access content.

Lauren Smith is a certified teacher in exceptional student education with a Masters in Instructional Design and specializations in reading, and English for speakers of other languages, as well as students with autism in grades K-12. She is also certified in education from birth through four years old and is a certified teacher of the gifted for grades K-12.
Having had the privilege of working with students across various age groups and cultural backgrounds, Lauren has taught coding, reading, and mathematics to elementary, middle, and high school children from around the world. Her enthusiasm for both general and special education settings is palpable, and she currently teaches 5th grade at a public school in Hollywood, FL in the United States of America.
Beyond the classroom, Lauren is a mother of three, ages nine, twelve, and sixteen. Her personal experience as a parent, especially to a child with special needs, fuels her passion for inclusive education. Lauren's teaching philosophy centers around the belief in a growth mindset, asserting that, with the right tools, children can master any concept and achieve expertise from a young age.
In her coding classes, Lauren seamlessly integrates math and coding concepts, empowering students to create their own video games and animations through computer code while organically learning mathematical principles. Her joy lies in witnessing her students' faces light up as they discover the possibilities of their newfound knowledge.
As an avid reader herself, Lauren endeavors to instill a love for reading in her students and her own children. Her favorite children's books, ranging from "Wonder" by R. J. Palacio to the "Percy Jackson Series" by Rick Riordan, reflect her diverse literary tastes. Parents often seek her recommendations for captivating reads for children of all ages.
As a bilingual teacher fluent in Spanish, her native language, Lauren enjoys connecting with people from different corners of the globe and delights in practicing basic greetings in various languages. With a dream to travel the world with her family, Lauren Smith continues to inspire, nurture, and celebrate the joy of learning in every student she encounters.

Davy Smith is a dad of three, one boy and two girls who all love to code. He lives in sunny ☀️ Miami, FL with his family. Davy holds a degree in Networks Systems Technologies. He codes on Scratch, HTML, and Python. He has also worked in the broadcasting industry in post production for over 20 years. Mr. Smith is excited to be a part of this amazing team of teachers whose goal is to create a learning environment where kids feel comfortable with making mistakes as they learn. Mr. Smith’s goal is to teach children coding in a fun and laid back environment.

Alberto Rodriguez, our teen Spanish teacher, is a native of Venezuela. He has been living in the United States for over 30 years and worked in the public school system for over 15 years. He aims to teach teens words and phrases in Spanish that they can use in their every day lives. He also knows the importance of learning grammar rules when learning a new language, so he teaches the correct way to write and read Spanish in his classes. Sr. Rodriguez is retired and now lives with his wife in the beautiful and sunny State of Florida.
