Learners can review for upcoming ELA tests by going over the art of short written responses and essay writing. As a New York State certified teacher, I provide learners with resources and strategies for assessments.

Lesson 1
Essay Writing Under Pressure
Read the excerpt from "Run Away Home" on page 1 and answer the 2 written response questions.

Lesson 2
Narrative Writing Questions
In this lesson you will write the story from the point of view of the Narrator's mother. Remember, this would mean the same events in the story are taking place but through the eyes of a different character. Take note of the times the mother and the narrator interacted in the story because you can retell this event in your essay.  You will also plan to write a narrative story continuing the events with the same characters. For this narrative essay, you are coming up with a whole new plot.

The Art of Written Response
Read the excerpt from "Baby Mammoth Mummy: Frozen in Time!" found on page 6. What is the meaning of the phrase "perfectly preserved" in paragraph 1 of "Excerpt from Baby Mammoth Mummy: Frozen in Time!"? Use two details from the article to support your response. Perfecting Written Responses
Read the excerpt from "Discovering the Inca Ice Maiden: My Adventures on Ampato". Answer the short written response question for the article.

Essay Writing
Review both nonfiction articles then review the essay question on page 11 of the document. Plan a three paragraph essay answering the essay question.
I have a Bachelor's Degree in English Literature and a Master's Degree in Special Education. I have two New York state teaching certifications in English Language Arts and Special Education.  I have been teaching in a district setting and remotely for over ten years. 
Homework Offered
Learners will read three texts from a 2017 grade 5 ELA assessments and answer the written response questions provided. Learners will have an additional task of writing 2 narrative essays. Learners will also write an analysis essay comparing two nonfiction articles.
1 - 2 hours per week outside of class

This class is for any learner that is preparing for a standardized state ELA assessment. Not every state requires learners to write a narrative essay (lesson 2), so if you are not sure you can reach out. The format is typical up to grade 8.
