Taught by a former financial & investment profession and certified teacher, this ongoing class will use "real time" immersive Minecraft play to teach economics, civics, city planning, government, banking and other social studies basics. For this class, students work in a Minecraft "Realm" called "MisterMarkTV". This class is structured play with the end purpose of teaching students how to build a community and city inside the realm with specific parameters and rules such as: Zoning (adhering to specific building rules and codes to teach city planning and community development) Currency (using a set Minecraft currency of "diamonds" for purchasing of land for building dwellings or establishing in world businesses) Public vs. Private Entities (this concept will be taught by students accessing public resources and mines vs. privately owned land) Community and Social Responsibility (this concept will be taught with the game level set at "Survival - Easy" requiring students to learn about decision making, weighing risks versus rewards. Hunger, and the need to replenish food sources will be activated, as well as the setting of "losing inventory" which is a consequence of accidents and eliminations from hostile "mob" characters. Banking (the game will have a "central bank" from which they will learn concepts of loans, deposits and safety of a currency system). Intelligence, emotional, social and adversity quotients will be challenged through interaction with their student peers and the direction of the teacher. The student will learn economics, city planning & community building. The teacher will serve as the arbitrator, administrator and of the realm. Issues of respecting others' Minecraft creations, properties, and projects are also reinforced by the teacher/moderator who interacts through conversations and discussions with the students during gameplay. Students will learn about: - Community zoning (standard street materials & parameters, 1/4 acre land plots, 16 x 16 blocks), Introduction explanation of "public" mines, central bank and temporary housing. - Using a common currency "diamonds", which must be mined to obtain. - Building codes (height, materials, etc.) - Businesses (choosing trades, farming, builder, miner, etc.) - Future casting and planning (determining direction, new areas, etc.) - Understanding the difference between industries, "service", "manufacturing", "production". The class will be conducted on a Minecraft "realm", a private server. Gamer tags will be necessary to join the realm and participate. To ensure the privacy and safety of students, parents will need to message the teacher, their student's gamer tags directly through a private message.
