This one-sitting course will cover the basics of essay structure, from picking a topic and developing a thesis to the foundation (outline) of a persuasive essay in a single sitting! Students will discover how to pick a topic and develop a thesis using a simple, effective, step-by-step method. From there, they will be led into an exercise to support them in creating the "kernel" of an essay, which is a basic outline from which an essay is created. Discussion and resources will be provided to help learners develop their kernel essay into a full essay. The class includes break-out sessions where learners will support each other to complete tasks in groups. There will also be an in-class exercises, led by the teacher. For learners who want to engage more deeply with fleshing out their essay, I will be providing links to useful graphic organizers and other online resources for essay writing. This course is useful for both the beginner essay writer and for the person looking to tighten up their essay structure skills. This class may go over time by up to 20 minutes.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I started teaching essay writing as an instructor of the University of Waterloo, in Ontario. Since then, and for six years now, I've taught essay writing to grade 10-12 students. Writing is a special passion of mine: I've been a journalist for over 20 years, and have written some short published stories and poems. I have also worked as a performing poet and actor with troupes of like-minded artists. Currently I'm writing a book about compassionate communication.
