Discover & Explore Earth Science Class

In this 4-session class, learners will explore the structure and location of some of the world's deadliest volcanoes. Learners will examine how these volcanoes are formed and find out fascinating facts about the earth and its tectonic plates.

We will examine the structure of the earth and look at the relationship between volcanoes, moving plates, magma, and hot spots. We will explore different types of volcanoes, assess their danger rating, and examine the suffocating gases they release.

We will complete the class with a quiz to see how much of an expert volcanologist the students have become!

Session 1: This session begins by exploring the structure of the earth and its tectonic plates. We will then begin our journey into volcanology by exploring the part that magma plays in the creation of mountain ranges, ridges and volcanoes.

Session 2: In this session we will examine the structure of a volcano by building a cross-section paper model and become familiar with the terminology used to describe its features. We will begin to create a fact book describing some of the world’s deadliest volcanoes and their location.

Session 3: This session will explore the different types of volcanoes and looks at the different stages of an eruption. We will continue to build up our fact book.

Session 4: In this final session, we will examine in detail just how deadly volcanoes can really be and learn how eruptions threaten humans and animals who live in the risk zone. We will then work together to devise our own emergency evacuation plans and think about why people still choose to live near active volcanoes. We will finish our fact book and test our knowledge with an online quiz.

All worksheets needed to complete each session will be posted in the classroom prior to the start of the class. It is not essential that students use these, but they are designed to increase student participation and engagement in the sessions.

This class is best taught with student cameras switched on. Discussion and collaboration is warmly encouraged.
