Class Experience

In this class, we will dig into the content and instructional practices that students would receive within a brick and mortar classroom for their science block. Our instructional focus will support learners who are working on a first grade level or students needing standards based support for a first grade student. In this class, we will look at the different rock types that construct the layers of the Earth's crust: sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous. We will look at a few examples of each with photos, real life class examples, posters, and vocabulary visual slide support.

Then, following the steps of an experiment, we will create our own chocolate rocks modeled after the three different types of rocks on the Earth's surface. Students will create their own model of the rocks of Earth using household products and chocolate.

******* Chocolate is the most suitable material to use for this experiment. You can also use cheese, vegan chocolate, or even candle wax. Please advise that the boiling point of this substitution will impact the end results modeled during class*******
Learning Goals
Students will learn about the different rock types that construct the layers of the Earth's crust: sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous. How they are made and then create their own model representation with chocolate!

I’m a compassionate and charismatic teacher who loves to teach! I have taught Kindergarten through 5th grade students for the last 10 years. In that time, I have been a general education teacher in the public schools setting for 8 years and specialized as a reading coach to my school for an additional two years. I have been teaching online since February 2020 and am now a full time Outschool teacher! I’m certified to teach Elementary education from Kindergarten to 6th grade. I absolutely love teaching First Grade. I taught First Grade for 8 years and it is one of my favorite grades to teach. One of the largest academic transformations occurs in First Grade. I have taught these lessons in the public school setting with many students who have mastered the content. I’m looking forward to sharing this fun class with your wonderful student!
