Class Experience

This class is developed for students that have dyslexia or other reading difficulties. Dyslexia is a learning disability that affects areas of the brain that process language and is a life-long challenge. Though there is no cure, early interventions result in the best outcomes. This class will give students strategies on how to attack words in their reading.
Week 1
3-minute warm-up exercise that involves first 200 common sight words.
10-minute spelling strategy: Teacher supports students on parts-and-whole spelling strategy. Words selected are one and two syllable words. Students are chunking blends (for example, step, trip), digraphs (for example, fish, chip), and chunking suffixes and prefixes (for example 'ing' as in thumping, 'pro' as in protest). After the spelling strategy is taught, students spell the words.
7-minute word game: The game addresses spelling words and additional words found in the selected passage that students will encounter in their reading. It is important to target words that students struggle with so that they can have success in reading the passage accurately.
10-minute read: Passage is read three times: choral read, independent read with accuracy stressed, independent read with fluency stressed.
Week 2
Same routine is followed.
3-minute warm-up: Students review first 200 common sight words.
10-minute spelling strategy.
7-minute word game.
10-minute read: Passage is read three times: choral read, independent read with accuracy stressed, independent read with fluency stressed.
Week 3
3-minute warm-up exercise that involves first 200 common sight words.
10-minute spelling strategy.
7-minute word game.
10-minute read: Passage is read three times: choral read, independent read with accuracy stressed, independent read with fluency stressed.

Dyslexia is a learning disability that affects areas of the brain that process language and is a life-long challenge. Though there is no cure, early interventions result in the best outcomes. I have taught in the public schools for 15 years as a Special Education Teacher where I addressed the needs of students with dyslexia. I know that good interventions can bring success to students that struggle with reading disabilities.
