In this weekly, on-going class, we will play through a lengthy, immersive Dungeons and Dragons campaign set at Strixhaven University, a fantastical place of arcane learning, magical hijinks, deep mysteries, and convoluted plots for gaining unlimited power. The players' characters arrive for their first year of university as hopeful novices. Will they buckle down and study hard, or will they be distracted by all of the extraordinary temptations sure to be found at a college of magical learning? As in all my official Dungeons and Dragons module campaigns, I add in lots of homebrew bonus content to make sure each class is a unique experience! While there will be combat in this adventure, this adventure is heavy on the roleplaying. Learners should be prepared to focus more on roleplaying than combat. This adventure is student-led, and while there are plenty of opportunities I will offer learners, they are free to take the adventure in any direction they wish. As such, there are no set plans for each week. Rather, students will direct the adventure during class time. They might elect to study magical lore, look for a part-time job to earn some gold, start a prank war, make friends on campus, or delve deep into the mysterious warrens beneath the college's foundations. Because this is a longer campaign, students will be able to unsubscribe to the class if a break is needed. Students joining the campaign part way through will easily be able to jump in to the adventure. This campaign uses the D&D 5th edition rules. Students should create a 1st level character prior to the start of class. Please note: students will be expected to cooperate with each other in class. Students are discouraged from playing characters with an evil alignment. Player vs. Player combat is not allowed. As in all of my classes, we celebrate diversity and students and characters of all backgrounds, identities, and orientations are welcome!
Learning Goals
Students will practice the many skills that Dungeons and Dragons hones - creativity, problem solving, critical thinking, teamwork, leadership, public speaking, and the ability to perform quick mental math calculations.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been a homeschooling mother for 19 years to four children with very different learning styles. I have taught countless classes to homeschoolers over the years, ranging from Latin to art history to astrophysics. I've also assisted students in leading their own educational groups, such as book clubs and social justice clubs. For four years, I traveled the United States full-time in an RV with my family; we visited 46 states and enjoyed everything from viewing amazing wildlife in National Parks to entertainment and great food in some of the biggest cities. We've now settled down near the beach in sunny Florida.
I believe in meeting children where they are and tailoring their education to fit their needs. I believe that the best education a child can have is an education they feel they have ownership of. Children learn and retain information best when the subject has personal relevance to them and when they are guided towards their own discovery of knowledge. One of my favorite things about teaching here on Outschool is watching children grow in confidence and learn through play.
Dungeons and Dragons is one of my favorite hobbies - I love everything about it, from writing stories and reading lore to painting miniatures and making detailed digital maps to laughing with my learners and being surprised by their creativity. I love other games as well - if it's not D&D night at my home, we play video games (Gartic Phone and Mario Kart are current favorites) or board games.
Creating a safe, affirming, and anti-racist classroom is my biggest priority. Whether students identify as LGBTQ+, neurodiverse, socially anxious, or if they need support in any other way, I provide gentle encouragement and the space for them to be themselves while having fun.
