Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
Beginner - Intermediate Level
This class uses Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition rules. I have designed it with a more simplistic play for younger students ages 7 to 12. Just like D&D the party will work together to decide how best to complete the quest with one change, mathematical problems are sprinkled throughout the adventure. For example the party may come upon a group of 3 orcs guarding a cave entrance, before the party can interact with the Orcs a player must solve -3 + 5 = ? Math problems are divided equally between players so everyone gets a chance to solve them. Problems will be age appropriate and if students need help that’s what I am here for as the Dungeon Master/teacher. After successfully answering the question play begins with rolling for initiative.

For the sake of time I will have pre-made character sheets students can use. This is a one shot adventure that will take one hour to run.

Learning Goals

Students will learn math skills such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of whole numbers, decimals and fractions all while playing Dungeons and Dragons. Students will also learn how to work together as a team by using social, reasoning and critical thinking skills that are age appropriate.
