Dungeons and Dragons Math Adventure for Elementary School Kids

Your child will learn the basics of math addition, subtraction, multiplication and addition while playing Dungeons and Dragons. I replace the "roll to hit" with an appropriate math question. Players of all experience levels are welcome.

Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
Students will play the campaign using a free roll20.net account. I will post a link to the specific Roll20 game for each class. We will also use Zoom to interact with each other. I will be the Dungeon Master (the person who facilitates the game and ensures fair play. In the beginning of the first class I will go over the basic rules of Dungeons and Dragons and then revisit those rules whenever necessary. As the game progresses the following topic will be taught; team work, team building, public speaking, reasoning, critical thinking, math, problem solving, research skills and much more.

Students will factor math questions in place of rolling a D20 to hit the creature or doing an ability check/saving throw. Although this is a math class we will still have plenty of time to roll play. Get the question right and you hit the monster you are fighting.

Learners can expect challenging situations in every session that will push them to use the skills I mentioned above.

The first session will cover the basics of the game, choosing a premade character, reading the character sheet, public speaking (each student will introduce themselves and their character. Students can jump into the adventure at anytime, therefore the following is a loose interpretation of how the sessions are organized. I will teach a little of each topic in every session.

We will cover adventuring and gear, combat and actions taken. How to interact with NPCs (non player characters). How to properly conduct adventuring, combat and how to properly interact as team. How teamwork to defeat a boss. Reading and understanding character stats and researching. Critical thinking in playing the game. With all subsequent sessions your student will have fun and learn/hone many life skills.

Learning Goals

Students will learn team building, teamwork, problem solving, critical thinking, research and math skills all while having fun using their imaginations playing the greatest game on earth, Dungeons and Dragons. Students will speak with each other (public speaking) and learn how to listen to other points of view as well as voice their own. Students will learn how to respect other people's opinions and be considerate of those opinions
