Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi,
I'm a self-described generalist with a wide range of interests. My classes will focus primarily on cyber security, helping students develop awareness and skills to protect their privacy online and hopefully, inspire some to consider a future in the cyber security industry. I will also be adding classes for self defense that will place an emphasis on healthy movement, realistic strategies for avoiding conflict and effective techniques to protect yourself if conflict is unavoidable. Another area I will be teaching is Dungeons & Dragons basics - how to create a character, some basic rules and advice to setting up and running an adventure.
I am a cyber security professional by training with over 14 years experience in systems administration and six years focusing on security. This is a broad field with several career tracks including management, penetration testing/red teaming (offensive), disaster recover and incident response (forensics), threat hunting (defensive) and more. Even if you aren't considering a career in cyber security, developing cyber security awareness is a life skill that you will need as long as you use a mobile device or computer.
I believe that an enthusiastic teacher who genuinely loves the topics being discussed is going to be able to engage like-minded students and win over some that weren't so interested. I encourage my students to take what they learn in class and practice to really own it. I feel strongly that you get out of practice what you put into it and this applies to everything you may learn.
Outside of career, a couple of my interests include martial arts and Dungeons & Dragons. I have been practicing the Korean martial art Hapkido for 18 years, teaching lower belts and independently taking on several students of my own. I have more recently gotten into Dungeons & Dragons as a player and then as a Dungeon Master (DM) who plans out adventures for the players.
