What's included

1 live meeting
55 mins in-class hours per week
Homework
1 hour per week. Students will be asked to update their character sheets after characters level up (not every session but perhaps every few sessions). That will take about 30 minutes. These sheets will then be uploaded to the classroom, if they aren't on Roll20. Roll20 sheets in our game will be accessible to both DM and player.
Assessment
Informal assessment will occur through the teacher's interactions with students during the class. When character sheets are uploaded/updated on Roll20, the teacher will give technical feedback about their accuracy and completion, since this can be a very daunting process, and even experienced players overlook some details.

Class Experience

Student-players will receive extensive weekly support from the teacher-dungeon master in developing roleplaying skills, knowledge of game mechanics, and cooperation to achieve a group goal.

We will start at LEVEL ONE in an iconic location, the Gnarley Forest, the largest woodland near the famous free city of Greyhawk. Throughout the course, we will travel all over the world of Greyhawk, possibly playing such well known adventures as Castle Greyhawk, Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh, Temple of Elemental Evil, White Plume Mountain, and Tomb of Horrors, wherever player interest takes us, possibly even to the stars or other planes of existence.

Our first session will be a session zero where we will discuss DM and player expectations, and I will help players polish up their characters and/or set up a Roll20 character sheet. New students may join our class at any time by making a character of the same level as the lowest level members in the current group. I will message new students who join in the middle of the course to tell them what level of character they need and what additional money or equipment they may have.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their social and communication skills through cooperation and discussion in class. They will also develop roleplaying skills and technical knowledge of Dungeons and Dragons 5e.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I am just starting on Outschool, but I have been teaching over 20 years. I have been DMing Dungeons and Dragons 30+ years, and I have taught online since 2011. I love languages and have taught Latin and Ancient Greek and studied many others including German and Italian. I have also taught ancient history and literature, classical and comparative mythology, and linguistics. I also love to code, and I have taught friends and family coding over the years, though not in the classroom. I have a Ph.D. In Classics (Greek & Latin) from the University of Virginia, and I currently teach Latin full time for grades 6 through 12. I have four creative and lively sons, three of which have already enjoyed courses on Outschool.
