*Saturday campaign just started and is forming a full party, so its still a great time to join.* Welcome to D&D! There's much adventuring to do, and before we do that, parents its important you know what our classes are all about. All our ongoing campaigns focus on building what we call "employment skills", such as team work, integrity, accountability, and problem solving abilities. Our games, run by professional educators who train together on our core principles, focus on the learning process, not just the game product. This is more than just "adventuring". Its structured skill building through imaginative play. We're excited you're here. This campaign course is the intended follow up adventure for students who have reached level three in either our DnD Club Academy Icespire Peak camp, our D&D 100 Camp, or by completing our introductory series through D&D 105. For students who have not yet taken a DnD Club Academy class, we STRONGLY RECOMMEND that students complete at least one of our 103-106 courses before enrolling in our ongoing campaigns. If you've never played D&D before, we recommend our 101-103 games. Our style of games emphasizing fairness, teamwork, and cooperative learning are very popular with most students, and it is recommended your student becomes familiar with DnD Club Academy's style before committing to a long term session. Students who follow these guidelines tend to have much better long term experiences with roleplaying games, and especially our campaigns. Adventure Overview: Giants have emerged from their strongholds to threaten civilization as never before. Hill giants are stealing all the grain and livestock they can while stone giants have been scouring settlements that have been around forever. Fire giants are press-ganging the smallfolk into the desert, while frost giant longships have been pillaging along the Sword Coast. Even the elusive cloud giants have been witnessed, their wondrous floating cities appearing above Waterdeep and Baldur’s Gate. Where is the storm giant King Hekaton, who is tasked with keeping order among the giants? The humans, dwarves, elves, and other small folk of the Sword Coast will be crushed underfoot from the onslaught of these giant foes. The only chance at survival is for the small folk to work together to investigate this invasion and harness the power of rune magic, the giants’ weapon against their ancient enemy the dragons. The only way the people of Faerun can restore order is to use the giants’ own power against them. STUDENT EXPECTATIONS: Students agree adhere to our core philosophy that roleplaying games are team based, inclusive, and supportive of fellow players. Students will strive, to the best of their abilities, to help each other both in and out of game. Any deliberate behavior to negatively impact another player's character or make students feel excluded will be cause for potential removal from the course without refund. This is at the discretion of the DM and Adam Scott, the DnD Club head teacher. As this is a subscription based course students are welcome to join so long as space is available and they meet the course prerequisite. Updates are provided each week for students joining after the beginning of a storyline, and the DMs make a specific effort to ensure that everybody feels not just welcomed but included. For parents: What if you've never played an RPG, what is it like? Role-playing games are player driven, putting you and your character at the center of the plot. Your choices will decide the outcome: from heroic victory to an untimely end. We're here to tell a great story that makes you feel like you're in your favorite book or movie. More importantly, these games allow us to work on problem solving, team building, and social skills. Ultimately, they are a lot of fun, and you won't even realize you're learning until you far into your quest. Who will like this class? 1) Players who understand the basic mechanics of D&D, and have enough knowledge to either create or select a character. 2) Players who want to explore a world, discover exciting places, and make complicated decisions. 3) Players who are interested in developing a story, interacting with quirky, noble, and sometimes nefarious characters. 4) Working together with other players to solve problems, and have a great time in the process! As a professional educator and professional dungeon master, we know how to make adventures all about the players and mesh different learning styles into a cohesive group. This adventure is scheduled to last about 10-12 weeks. It may go longer depending on student interest and for the unique nature of each group's story. New students are welcome to join the class so long as space permits. STUDENT EXPECTATIONS: Students agree adhere to our core philosophy that roelplaying games are team based, inclusive, and supportive of fellow players. Missing a week: most students who enroll in the course do so for the full duration. This is not required. When a student "withdrawals" from the class, this will open a spot for another player. If a student needs to miss a week due to an appointment, they may notify the DnD Club at least 48 hours in advance, and receive a 50% refund for that week's enrollment. This "holds the seat" for the student. Parents may use this option once per section. Note regarding late arrivals: As this is a roleplaying experience that is based on the personalities of the players, abrupt inclusion of a new participant often disrupts the quality of the session for all involved. Students who arrive late to a session will be admitted at a time that does not disrupt the action. Accordingly, they may be asked to wait until next meeting or session. Refunds will be granted at the discretion of the instructor. Please communicate ahead of time if there are any potential scheduling/tech challenges for a scheduled section. Note to parents/students: You may choose to allow your child to have access to the D&D Beyond website (dndbeyond.com) to assist in their creation and use of characters or other content for use in this class. Use of and access to the D&D Beyond website is not required for this class, and it is solely within your discretion as the parent whether to allow your child to access the D&D Beyond website. Please note that the D&D Beyond website is a third-party service over which we have no control or responsibility, and any data or information shared on it or any other third-party website is subject to their terms of service and privacy policies.
Learning Goals
Students will get to experience all that a roleplaying game has too offer: teamwork, problem solving, social interaction, and basic statistical calculations. Through the process of playing, their characters will develop and evolve, leading to discussions with the instructor and other players about applying skills in a game setting.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Our games are team focused and inclusive. All students receive turns in the game world, and the DM seeks to include everybody in the context of the narrative. Deliberately negative actions by other players directed at other students' characters is not allowed and, if this occurs repeatedly, will result in removal from the game without a refund.
Role-playing games offer a creative "sandbox" in which participants can engage in imaginative problem solving. Fantasy violence will not be directly depicted, but the possibilities of this within the game will be discussed. Students may wish to explore ideas related to their characters that involve in-game "weapons" and "spells" for the use of "in-game" violence. All instructor descriptions are as age appropriate as possible.
