Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 11
Beginner Level
This class is an authentic learning environment where we are learning to transfer rhythm activities to an instrument and begin to play like the professionals do. Learners will:
     1. read music as a set of instructions through standard notation for percussion for quarter notes, eighth notes, sixteenth notes and quarter and eighth rests.
     2. learn a basic stick grip and how to sit or stand to play the drum

Role of the teacher will be:
      1. to guide through active listening and responding to student technique and performance, and the development of basic music milestones to create, perform, respond, and connect with music through the performance of a variety of rhythm patterns.
      2. discuss mental rehearsal techniques as a practice method when we are away from the drum.
      3. use a variety of techniques from call and response, mimic and rote learning, reading music, and improvisation.

Learners are encouraged to play their snare drum pad or drum instrument to expand their current skills and discover how rhythm and drumming applies in the real-world as part of an ensemble. Learners are further encouraged to come to the sessions to try something new, ask questions, give feedback, and share their musical interests. We will all learn and grow together.
