US Grade 6 - 9
Intermediate - Advanced Level
This course is for students getting ready to take the fall administration of the SHSAT for entrance into one of the specialized high schools in NYC who need math prep. I will be teaching the following topics specifically TO the test: (This is different from my other SHSAT math prep class because you can sign up a week at a time instead of the full 8 weeks. This is appropriate if you have strengths in a few topics and need review in just a few topics. If you look at the list of topics, which correspond to 7th grade math units, and you feel overwhelmed, you should probably sign up for the 8-week course.) Week 1 (Week of Sept. 2). Ratios and Proportions (including percents) Week 2 (Week of Sept 9). Operations with Rational Numbers and general arithmetic problem solving Week 3 (Week of Sept 16). Algebraic Expressions (including distributive property and factoring) Week 4 (Week of Sept 23). Algebraic Equations (including equations with fractions and variables on both sides) Week 5 (Week of Sept. 30). Consecutive Integer Problem Solving and special equation problem solving Week 6 (Week of Oct. 7). Geometry Week 7 (Week of Oct. 14). Statistics Week 8 (Week of Oct. 21). Probability This course will be taught at the level needed for preparation to place into one of the schools requiring the test as the SOLE admission criterion: The Bronx High School of Science( The Brooklyn Latin School Brooklyn Technical High School High School for Mathematics, Science and Engineering at City College of New York High School for American Studies at Lehman College Queens High School for the Sciences at York College Staten Island Technical High School Stuyvesant High School There is NO calculator for this test. Each class will introduce an aspect of the week's topic, demonstration on problem solving, and opportunity for practice. Participation is required to get anything out of class: using a notebook for note-taking and volunteering answers in class. With dedication and a good foundation from grade 7, any student can learn the required skills in these 8 weeks and place into one of the elite specialized high schools.

Bachelor's Degree in English from Dartmouth College
My name is Jaime and I am a long-time (20+ years) math teacher of middle and high school students. My favorite courses to teach are algebra and geometry. In Outschool, I am offering preparation for the specialized high school test given yearly to 8th graders for entry into one of the 8 specialized high schools in New York City that use the SHSAT as their only admission criterion. As a Brooklyn Tech alum and teacher of SHSAT math prep, I know about the rigor necessary to do well on the test and to succeed at one of the schools. I am offering regular tutoring for any mid-elementary to secondary math level as well.
After Brooklyn Tech, I attended Dartmouth College, an Ivy League college. Being able to succeed and graduate early from Dartmouth as an English major started with my preparation in elementary school and middle school, but attending Brooklyn Tech, majoring in the Math/Science Institute major there, solidified my love for math and I pursued it as a career after college with a degree in Math Education from City College as a NYC Teaching Fellow, then later in the Mathematics Leadership program at Bank Street College.
I believe that every student can learn math, if they have an open mind and a supportive, knowledgeable instructor who offers skill-building, but also problem solving. Every student who learns with me increases confidence and ability.
When I am not teaching students online, I am teaching full time at a public high school, listening to various genres of music including old school R and B, classical, pop, and mostly gospel, cooking, and spending time with family and at church. Nowadays I am learning about new ingredients for making smoothies, and new ways to engage students in mathematics learning post-pandemic.
