Class Experience

*All "busy-work" and commenting in the classroom is optional in this class.

First week:
To ease into class, we will start with a well-known character in Warriors. I will upload a video of the drawing process from start to finish, accompanied by an introductory video about what Zendoodle is as well as what color symbolism (and symbolism in general) is. This will ease students into new concepts by going over already familiar imagery which relate to Firestar. For example, the fire he is named for, as well as stars (for StarClan) and the colors orange, yellow, and red. After the video is uploaded, learners will play a quick Kahoot game to reinforce the new terms and skills they have learned. Once the Kahoot is completed, students will be expected to draw their own Zendoodle Firestar. Ideas about Zendoodle styles will be shared and discussed in class.

Second week:
During the second week, learners will analyze the symbolism that relates to Bluestar. They will create lists of things from the books which they believe best represent her as a character. They will also start working out how to incorporate these images into their own work. A video will be posted discussing other ways of showing symbolism in art (ex. vantas) and how to express these symbols in Zendoodle form. Hidden images and secrets in art will be introduced, making it a fun process for learners to hide their own secrets in a Zendoodle pattern. The week will close with the learners sharing their art in the classroom and attempting to work out the secrets and meanings in each other's art.

Third week:
For the third week, we will draw Ravenpaw. As a less prominent character, this will challenge the learners to work out colors and symbols which work best for him. He is not a character with a "clear" color selection, so learners will first be faced with a challenge to pick what colors best represent him and why. Only when this discussion is complete will the next lecture video be posted, with my instructions and interpretations of this idea. Learners will create a Ravenpaw Zendoodle piece of art which reflects their own color choices, but for this instance they will be asked to back up their ideas with passages or scenes from the book. The week will conclude with learners participating in a final Kahoot, this time covering all other new concepts which they have learned.

Fourth week:
For the fourth week, learners will decide among themselves which cat will be drawn (ex. Jayfeather, Needletail, etc.) and go over the examples of color symbolism which we have learned. Once they have decided on a cat, as well as the colors which symbolize them, each learner will sketch out a scene which they believe holds symbolism about that cat's life. Attention will be given to color use as well as any items used within the picture that represent each thing. Learners will then share their ideas with each other and discuss why they believe these particular symbols in their art reflect the chosen cat. Finally, once there has been suitable discussion, learners will then finish their piece and share it with the rest of class.
Learning Goals
By the end of the class, students will have a grasp of color symbolism as well as imagery and setting. They will be able to develop their own ideas to create original works in the Zendoodle style.
