This class is perfect for any student who loves art and has any level of artistic skill (even beginners!), all are welcome! This class is an asynchronous flexible schedule class in which we will learn how to draw animals from a different place each week! Since this class does not meet during live lessons, you will receive a recorded video lesson each week demonstrating step-by-step how to draw the weekly drawings. This class will be 4 weeks long and each week will have a different theme. Week 1: Canada: We will learn to draw a Moose, a Beaver, and a Blue Jay! Week 2: Canada: We will learn to draw a loon, a Rainbow Trout, a Barn Owl, and a River Otter! Week 3: U.S.A: We will learn to draw animals from Hawaii such as the Hawaiian Honeycreeper, a Monk Seal, a Pueo, and a Hawaiian Stilt! Week 4: U.S.A: We will learn to draw animals from Arizona such as the Antelope Squirrel, Gila Monster, and Greater Roadrunner! Each week students will also have a weekly drawing challenge. The challenge will be posted in the classroom along with the video lesson. The drawing challenge will ask students to search their home or online to find an animal that suits the weekly theme, use it as a reference, and try to draw it! The students will be encouraged to bring their drawing to a weekly *optional* live Show & Tell Time meeting via Zoom. Students will also be able to share their art on a weekly thread in the asynchronous classroom to discuss with their fellow classmates. Students will reply to other student's artwork using encouraging and uplifting words. Being kind is the number one rule in this class, and it is expected that all students will be supportive of one another, as well as follow all Outschool rules in the classroom. In summary, each week we will: • Watch a recorded step-by-step drawing lesson • Do the weekly Drawing Challenge and post your work in the classroom • (Optional) Attend the weekly Show & Tell Live Meeting • Share our artwork asynchronously in the classroom and comment on other student's artwork using encouraging and uplifting words. Reminder: This class does NOT meet for live drawing lessons. All lessons will be recorded videos posted to the classroom. Students can work on their lesson at any time that is convenient for them. The live Show & Tell time is optional, and students are NOT required to attend. If cost is prohibitive for you, please reach out to inquire about available coupons! I look forward to meeting you and drawing realistic animals together!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Mekayla Dionne. I am a Toronto, Canada based Artist and Art Teacher! I teach drawing and painting classes for children aged 5-16. I teach a variety of mediums such as acrylic, watercolour, tempera, graphite, and more! I love to help students build their confidence in their art as well as in themselves.
I went to OCAD University and received a BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts), majoring in Drawing & Painting. I now have my own professional art practice and I frequently show my paintings in galleries.
My artistic passion is in creating large scale abstract paintings using dozens of layers to achieve a highly tactile surface, as well as create optical illusions. However, my foundation is in realism drawing. I spent years building the skill of drawing things as realistically as possible, including drawing flowing hair, water, and rocks, using shading techniques.
When I teach, my primary goal is to make sure everyone is having fun. Art can be frustrating at times, and a lot of practice goes into learning just one skill. I know how important it is to make it a fun experience for children so that they don't feel discouraged. After all, the best thing you can do is practice, practice, practice!
When I am not teaching or creating my own art, I love to swim at the beach, go on bike rides, and tend to my plants. I am super friendly so don't be afraid to say "hi!", and I can't wait to meet all of you!
