Drawing Horses and Unicorns

I have developed a childproofed technique for drawing horses, just for Outschool students! By the end of the course students will be able to amaze friends and family with their new skills.

In the first week we focus on the profile, or side view, of the horse. Each student learns to master a simple technique to draw a horse with good proportions. We look at the skeleton of the horse and compare it to the skeletons of other mammals. 

In week two we review the profile drawing technique and then begin visualizing the horse in three dimensions. Flat circles become spheres that we can rotate in space, allowing us to draw the horse from any angle. The class is punctuated with important equine anatomy terms.

Week three gets mythological. We once again review the profile technique but this time we add the fantasy elements of the unicorn. Students learn the historical origins of these beasts and we discuss how they have evolved in pop culture over the centuries. 

In the fourth and final session we draw horses in various poses. We discuss walk, trot, canter, and gallop. Horses are posed in dramatic action, pushing the previous techniques to their limits. Students who have not practiced between classes will find this session challenging.

I always post the videos of our classes so that students can rewatch them and maybe pick up something they missed the first time. If a student was absent for a class, or ill, or just distracted, they can watch the class at their leisure. I'm always happy to give feedback on work that is uploaded to the classroom and offer encouragement.
