Class Experience

Beginner Level
Every day of this summer camp, we learn to draw a new animal using basic shapes, coloring, texture, and shading techniques. Students choose the photo of the animal drawing reference and discuss their favorite animals as we learn to draw.

The class structure will proceed as follows:
Each class starts with introductions or a quick check-in. Then students choose the animal we draw from a selection of photos. I show the students step-by-step how to draw the animal using shapes on screen and by hand, checking in with student progress as we work.

All students are encouraged to add their own imaginative spin in realistic or cartoon styles and finish the drawing with shading or coloring. If time allows, we will repeat the process and draw a second animal, students' choice.

During drawing time, students are encouraged to socialize and share facts about the animals we draw as well as their pets. My goal is to create a creative, social learning environment where students will feel comfortable sharing their ideas and art with other young artists.

Artists learn through feedback. Students are encouraged --but not required-- to share in-progress drawings throughout the class and final pictures with one another.

Day 1: Draw a Dog
Day 2: Draw a Cat
Day 3: Draw an Axolotl or other student-choice water creature
Day 4: Draw a Humming Bird or other student-choice bird

Hi! I've been teaching for over 20 years. I love Outschool, and I'm excited to be able to share my passion for the arts with kids across the world!

I teach classes related to my all favorite things music and art. I love comics and graphic novels, anime of all sorts, science fiction and fantasy stories in all forms, drawing realistically, writing songs and singing. I love sharing all of these things with my students too; my greatest joy is in giving my students the tools they need to flourish as young musicians and artists.

** Note: If you're interested in one of my classes and don't see a time or date or age range that works for you, please message me, and I'll try my best to accommodate you and your child. **

I have a breadth of experience teaching a variety of subjects and ages although I'm best known locally as a piano teacher. I earned my Masters degree in Art Education from VCU and my Bachelors in Fine Arts with an emphasis on painting from Virginia Tech.

I am a former K-12 Visual Art teacher; I taught Art, Computer Art, Drawing, Journalism, Photojournalism, and Yearbook in a public high school. At VCU, I taught as an adjunct professor where I enjoyed teaching Photoshop, Illustrator, iMovie, and graphic design to aspiring art teachers. I used to teach Comics, Cartooning and Manga, and Stop-Motion Animation to kids at an in-person summer arts camp-- one of my favorite jobs ever!

Last but not least, I have been teaching piano lessons for 20 years. This is my tenth year running my piano studio, Elizabeth's Music and Arts, where I have the privilege of helping students to play music and invent their own, whether they are four years old or forty-five.

Throughout my career as an educator, I have worked with many students who deal with a number of physical or behavioral challenges, students who are on the Autistic spectrum, or who have ADHD. If your child has any differences or difficulties that could affect their learning, please don't hesitate to reach out and let me know how I can better help your learner.

Join me in a class to expand your creativity in art or in music!
